Will victory be sweet for Gwent syrup firm in the Monmouth Raft Race?

l HONEY and maple syrup firm Clarks is hoping to taste sweet success at Monmouth Raft Race by launching two super craft in this year’s event – the 48th of its kind. The Newport firm, which processes hundreds of

gallons of raw materials each week, is using waste products to launch its bid for victory in the testing charity fund raising race. This year’s Monmouth Raft Race is on Sunday,

September 1. Clarks factory manager Paul Phillips said: “We’re

using the steel barrels in which the honey and maple syrup arrives at the factory to make our rafts. “Each raft will be made up of eight of the 50 gallon

barrels on which there’ll be a platform holding a crew of ten.” The two rafts, The Master Syrupeers and Honey I

Sunk The Ship will see the launch of Clarks’ first attempt at the River Wye race. Paul, who took part in the event himself 20 years

ago, said: “We haven’t tested the design yet but we’re confident they’ll float and that we’ll be able to mount a strong challenge for honours – taking part will be sweet one way or another.” The Monmouth Raft Race is organised by the Rotary

Club of Monmouth. This year the event has attracted financial

sponsorship from Mandarin Stone and Kymin, in addition to promotional and operational support from Module IT. Hospice at home charity St David’s Hospice Care

receives three quarters of the funds raised from the event with the rest of the money being donated to other local charities. Monmouth Rotarian Norman Williams, welcoming

the Clarks team, said: “We’re delighted this fresh entrant, with two new crafts of 20 rafters, has signed up to the event this year. “The race is building up to be even more competitive

than ever with some sturdy contenders look for strong finishes. “Whatever happens it’ll be a barrel of fun.” Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care, said:

“Finding barrels is sometimes a stumbling block for entrants to the raft race but that’s clearly not the case for Clarks. “Now all they have to do is ensure that they stick the

barrels together effectively and that they arrive in one piece at the finish.” Monmouth Raft Race starts at Monmouth Rowing

Club and ends at Tump Farm six-and-a-half miles down river at Whitebrook where there are stalls, food, live music, a beer tent and entertainment.

Good luck!

l After almost four decades of producing some of the most outstanding jewellery you’ll ever see, this month will see Anthony Bingham hang up his tools and retire. We here at Voice would like

to wish Tony the very best for his retirement and would like to thank him for the tireless support he has given the magazine over the last decade. Although the retail side of the

business has been closed, most items can be supplied and the shop is still open for repairs, alterations, valuations and commissions until September 28. Mr Bingham’s shop is located in Newport Arcade.

Netball players crowned ‘Welsh team of the year’

l Students from Coleg Gwent have been crowned Welsh Netball Team Of The Year by the Welsh Netball Association for the second year running. The team, who study and train at

the College’s Crosskeys Campus, were awarded the accolade at a Cardiff ceremony celebrating school, college and university sporting excellence in Wales during June. Sport student and volunteer Ashleigh

Ridout, 18, from Blackwood, also continued her record of outstanding achievement at the event, receiving the runner up award in the Young Coach Of The Year category following her

national volunteering award from British Colleges Sport earlier this year. Coach Emma Hurley said:

“Crosskeys campus netball team has had another tremendous season in participation and results. “All netball students have made an

outstanding contribution to the college and wider netball community. “It’s fantastic for the team to be

recognised for both individual and team successes. I am really proud of the players.” The achievements of the team are

especially impressive given that students study full time at the Coleg Gwent

campus, working training and competitive matches around their studies. The team’s success during

the 2012-1013 season included winning the Urdd and Welsh FE Colleges netball tournaments and topping the British Colleges League. Many of the talented Coleg

Gwent team have also achieved places in Welsh squads and play

for local clubs. As well as being keen netball

players many of the students take part in the coaching and umpiring side of the game through the MV 50 volunteering scheme. Many students achieved over

50 hours of volunteering taking on roles as coaches, umpires and general officials for their local communities.
