PERFORM...

We love Newport-based singer- songwriter Angharad. Her amazing voice, combined with the chilled out stage-presence are the ingredients that will make her a star. We caught up with her at the Runway to Reality event to find out more.

How long have you been performing? I have been performing as a singer/ songwriter for seven or eight years around the South Wales and West region.

What inspired you to get into performing? I was 13 or so and working as a stagehand for a UK theatre tour called Cheek, the musical, which was written by Ian Luther who ironically ten years later is accompanying me at the Celtic Manor for the South Wales Next Top Model show. I have always enjoyed performing and singing and started gigging at 15 to top up my pocket money. My family are all fairly musical and it naturally progressed from there.

Who are your musical heroes and influences? When I was a child my parents were always listening to music from the 70s, so I tended to listen to older music more so

than modern music. So my influences I guess include Joni Mitchell, Karen Carpenter and Eva Cassidy. More recently I love the styles of Ben Howard, Rumer and Kings of Leon.

Describe your style. I would say my style is a bit of an eclectic mix of acoustic folk/pop, I like to write songs in open tunings on the guitar, I like the different textures it can bring to my music. I also write in standard tuning as well though.

What are your ambitions? I just want to be able to play my music to audiences and hopefully they will enjoy what they hear. My aim is to continue to improve and build a solid following and relationship with my fans. If I can continue to make a living, I will be happy and anything else I would consider a bonus.

What’s been your greatest achievement to date? Personally I would consider my degree in performance and media at The Atrium one of my main achievements. Musically, singing Video Killed the Radio Star with Geoff Downes of The Buggles, Asia and Yes, who also wrote my new single Live For The Moment from my EP. Plus supporting the legendary 10cc in 2011, and being in session on Alan Thompson’s Evening Show on BBC Radio Wales last month, which was a nerve- wracking but great experience.

Check out her website for future events and also, my EP is available now on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon. The links can be found on www.angharadmusic. com and you can follow her on Twitter (@Angharadmusic) and Facebook (Angharadmusic).
