PROFILE NEWPORT MARKET


Work to the High Street entrance and frontage of the city’s historic indoor market will be fi nished this autumn and marks the beginning of a new chapter for the grade-ll listed building.


T


he work has included restoring the entrance to its original, more central, position on High Street.


Other changes include an introduction of awnings to each stall front, helping to create a café atmosphere on High Street. The installation of sliding and folding doors aims to encourage restaurant and café use and the introduction of new terraces will relate directly to the interior fl oor levels of the market. The market is an important part


of the city’s history, and although shopping habits have changed considerably, the council wants to work with traders to look for creative new approaches for the 21st century. The market building will also


be one of the main venues for the 2013 Newport Food Festival. The mezzanine level will host the Festival Supper on 4 October and the majority of the produce for the menu will be sourced from the stalls within the market.
