Page 8 Secrets of the Southwest 2013 Fort Walsh – where history is alive!

Fort Walsh National Historic Site is a must-see attraction located 55 km southwest of Maple Creek. The scenic drive there takes visitors past Cypress Hills Vineyard & Winery and the conglomerate cliffs – don’t forget your camera. The history behind development in the area and the forma- tion of the Northwest Mounted Police began 130 years ago. A dispute over a missing horse that developed between a camp of Nakota and a group of wolf hunters and whiskey traders result-

ed in the Cypress Hills Massacre of 1873. The event stunned the Canadian government and hastened the establishment of a national police force – the NWMP. The force marched west in 1874 to stop the whiskey trade and secure Canada’s sovereignty in the West.

The fort has been reconstructed and visitors are welcome to

tour the site. Guides in period costume help guests relive the daily lives of the NWMP, and their overwhelming task of main- taining a delicate peace while preparing the West for settlement. A NWMP drill demonstration featuring a battle re-enactment and firing of a cannon and period rifles takes place during the fort’s Historic Trades Day – on August 3 this year. A Visitor Reception Centre features a museum, food conces- sion, gift shop, and video theatre. Visitors can also guide them- selves through the NWMP and civilian cemeteries, hike through cellar depressions of the Fort Walsh townsite, or enjoy a walk along Battle Creek at the Fort Walsh picnic site. Primitive camp- ing sites are located at the West Block Ranger Station. Tours of the Fort Walsh site take place daily during the sum- mer season, or you may sight-see at your leisure. The Gap Road between Cypress Hills Park (Centre Block) and Fort Walsh, and the Graburn Gap Road between Fort Walsh and Elkwater, Alta., may become impassable at times. It is wise to call to 306-662-3590, or Elkwater at 403-893-3833, or the Centre Block 306-662-5411 to ensure roads are passable.
