Leader is the centre of the retail area for this district and is known for its good weather and lots of sunshine. In fact, it’s been said that Leader is one of the sunniest places in North America with over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year. Leader is a community of contrasts – the prairie land- scape is broken by rolling hills to the south and the South Saskatchewan River valley to the north. Only 20 miles southeast of Leader, you will find the dry desert landscapes of the Great Sandhills. These sandhills encompass approx- imately 1,900 sq km and are one of the largest sand areas in Canada. Leader is situated close to the South Saskatchewan River valley and lies directly in the migratory bird flyways. Many bird watchers across North America come to Leader to view the Leader Birding Trail. Bird watchers will find over 200 species in this area, including the Canada goose, sharp- tailed grouse and ring necked pheasant. Along with the variety of birds, you will see wildlife such as white-tail deer, antelope and moose. The river is filled with pickerel, north- ern pike and sturgeon so if you like to fish, you won’t be disappointed.
Leader has something for everyone in the family. Be sure to stop by the tourist booth when you’re in town and get more information on what is happening in this area. The tourist booth opens the long weekend in May and remains open until the long weekend in September. The hours for the summer months are Thursday - Monday from 12 noon - 5 pm. The tourist booth is located on Highway 21, on the west side of the road. The tourist booth operator can be reached by calling 306-628-3995. During the winter months, information about Leader and area can be obtained by calling the Leader town office at 306-628-3860 or by dropping by the office located at 151 First Street W.
