Secrets of the Southwest 2013 Page 11 Western lifestyle and heritage important

Western lifestyle and heritage runs deep in Maple Creek, and the sport of rodeo is a large part of that culture. Four rodeos take place in the area during the summer months – Cowtown Pro Rodeo, Ranch Rodeo, Murraydale Stampede and Border Country Rodeo.

Along with rodeo, Maple Creek also hosts two horse

sales. A 4-H regional fair is held at the agricultural grounds in June, and a light horse competition is a mid-summer highlight for equine enthusiasts. Maple Creek is also the center for the Southwest Harness and Driving Club. The group uses teams of hors- es for activities such as wagon rides at public events, grand entries at rodeos, logging and harrowing rodeo grounds. The Maple Creek Stock

Dog Trial is held annually. The weekend event takes place south of town on the McDougald Ranch.

Cowboy poets from across

Canada and the U.S. converge in Maple Creek in September for the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Western Art & Gear Show. It’s two days of music and poetry along with a wide array of western gear and art on display and for sale. The Piapot Lions Club sponsors a well-attended gun and hobby show in November, and an antique and collect- ibles show in February. The fact Native and cow- boy cultures co-exist in har- mony led to the first Battle of the Little Big Puck 31 years ago. The annual hockey game pits the cowboys against the Indians and each team wears traditional dress during the third period. It is a highlight of the winter and a fundraiser for local charity.

The Southwest Harness & Driving Club is very active, often giving wagon rides at community events. They also hold a charity fundraiser at Cypress Park each year.
