Secrets of the Southwest 2013 Page 49 Leader celebrating centennial this year By Marcia Love Come celebrate a century of prosperity in the small

town that always has something going on to keep resi- dents and visitors alike entertained year-round. Leader is marking it's 100th anniversary this sum-

mer, with something for the whole family. The Chesterfield Relay, German grebble and a unique com- munity banquet and dance are just a few of the events in store for celebrations scheduled for June 14-16. The Chesterfield Relay Race, named after the town's Chesterfield Bridge, will have partici- pants canoeing, biking, running and horseback riding towards the finish line. Enjoy grebble, a treat similar to elephant ears that has become a tradition to serve in the com- munity that was established by German immi- grants in 1913.

Guests will be kicking up their heels at the banquet and dance on June 15. A special dinner catered by Merv's Pitchfork Fondue will show guests a different way of cooking steaks. Following the meal, a local band, the Hudec Brothers, will have people taking to the dance floor.

The centennial celebrations coincide with the

community's annual Wild West Daze festivities, which bring residents and visitors together for three fun-filled days. Other activities throughout the weekend include a parade, street hockey tournament and golf tournament. Leader is a community with numerous activities to keep families busy and enjoying the out- doors.

The addition of a new junior Olympic-

sized pool two years ago has made it a popu- lar place in the summer. The River Ridge Golf Club is also a bustling place. Other local attractions include the Smith Barn, which was built in 1914 and was the largest barn ever built in North America. The original barn is no longer standing, but a replica is situat- ed at the Leader Tourist Booth. It's a unique piece of the past that must be seen to believe! The Leader Millennium Gardens is a picturesque trib- ute to the town's history and culture. Drop by provincial heritage sites such as St. John's School or Blumenfeld Catholic Church. Come and see for yourself what makes Leader the perfect stop on your adventures in southwest Saskatchewan this summer!
