Page 36 Secrets of the Southwest 2013 Residents make Consul a great place to live
Nestled midway between Cypress Hills Park and the Montana border is the tight-knit village of Consul. With about 75 residents, getting involved and giving back are what keeps the community thriving. Settled in 1914, Consul has managed to hold its own for nearly a century thanks to its generous and caring residents. "We have a very good community that if something needs to be done, it gets done," said Mayor Linda Brown. One of the most recent examples of the community pull- ing together is its fundraising efforts for repairs and main- tenance of the skating rink. A supper and auction raised an impressive $55,000 for the cause. That's the kind of community-minded attitude that makes residents such as Warren Seifert proud to call Consul home.
Everybody chips in," he said.
Not only do the residents look out for their own, but reaching out to people in need in other countries is also important to them. Every year for the past decade, 17-35 residents have travelled to Vicente Guerrero, Mexico, where they assist in building homes for families. Seifert, who has been a long-standing volunteer on the mission trip, said the community has been instrumental in aiding in fundraising for the trip.
The population of Consul has dropped slightly in recent years, but it still remains the main centre south of Cypress

the area, businesses such as Reamer Trucking and Southline Gas & Oilfield Services Ltd. employ a number of local resi- dents. Consul still has a privately-operated rail line, which also contributes to the survival of the village. The rink is a busy place throughout winter, with a figure skating club and minor and senior hockey clubs. One of the most anticipated events of the summer is the Reno Rodeo. The "biggest little rodeo in the West" was named the Canadian Cowboys Association Rodeo of the Year in 2009. Other annual events include a Little Britches Rodeo, slo-pitch tourney and New Year's Eve 4-on-4 hock- ey tournament.
The community is now in the early stages of preparing for its centennial celebrations next year. The milestone will be marked in July 2014.
