CONTINUUMRECYCLING
bottles per year, including 40,000 tonnes of food-grade rPET pellet, produces 11 different streams of plastic, including food-grade PET.
BEST OF BRITISH With the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games just around the corner the partnership is hoping that the concept of keeping the whole recycling process British will capture the imagination of the consumer, who in recent times has often been left confused and disenchanted by mixed messages from the industry. As we are given a guided tour of the facility, our leader points out the streams of videotape gnarled up in the conveyor belts, evidence of well-meaning but ill-advised consumers.
“the Continuum Recycling plant willmore than double the amount of bottle-grade recycled plastic (rPET) previously created in Britain, andwill allowCCE tomeet its commitment to use 25 per cent rPET in all of is bottles by the end of 2012.”
THEWORLD’S GREATEST The partnership says that the Lincolnshire plant is the largest, most sophisticated plastics reprocessing facility in the world, and as I am guided around the vast site I think that I would be hard-pressed to argue with that claim. The facility is truly impressive; it is a slick, well-oiled machine that makes the complicated inner- mechanics involved in sorting the multiple streams of plastic look as straightforward as boiling a kettle. Simon Baldry, managing
director of CCE, said: "Our investment in Continuum Recycling shows that we are serious about setting the industry standard for sustainable packaging. Today's opening of this £15m state-of- the-art facility will transform recycling in this country and ensure that we achieve our ambition of incorporating 25 per cent recycled PET in our plastic bottles. This is a first for the industry and an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to build a low-carbon, zero- waste business here in Great Britain." Johnathan Short, managing
director of ECO Plastics, added: "Today is a great day for ECO Plastics and a great day for UK recycling generally. It demonstrates the huge potential of working with global leaders like Coca-cola Enterprises, as well as the strategic value of long-term partnerships.

Together they have provided us with confidence to invest in the next-generation technology which will be crucial to our industry's further development."
A PERFECT MATCH Ethical plastic bottle recycler, ECO Plastics began re- reprocessing post consumer products in 2006 and has over the past five years quadrupled its processing capacity, tripling the factory footprint. In 2009 it became the first UK company to receive food grade accreditation for its rPET resin. Despite its success, it is
undeniable that ECO Plastics is somewhat diminutive when compared to its colossal bedfellow, and such an extreme imbalance has the potential to capsize a partnership. But Short says that so far the marriage between ECO Plastics and CCE has been a very happy one and that while the company will remain focused on the current venture, ECO Plastics would be happy to replicate its success with other companies in the
future. Watch this space.
