Rigid continues growth

Belgian independent paper and packaging company, VPK has always prioritized investment. With integrated sites in Belgium, France, Poland, the Czech Republic and the UK, VPK is one of the largest privately owned packaging firms in Europe. The latest round of investments – totaling some £4 million – was recently completed at the Group’s UK operation, Rigid Containers Ltd, in Desborough, Northamptonshire. Rigid Containers operates two sites in the UK— its administrative headquarters and original factory in Desborough, and a state of the art, greenfield site in Selby, Yorkshire. “The main objective of our investment at Desborough was to bring it in line

with our Selby site, in terms of production capabilities and capacity,” explains Richard Coward, managing director. “I am delighted to say that the installation of the new equipment was completed on time and to budget.” At the centre of the investment plan was a brand new 2.8m BHS dry-end for the corrugator and a four colour Latitude casemaker. Both machines were installed and commissioned recently. In addition the company has confirmed that it will be installing three flexo print units to an existing Bobst SP-160 flat bed die-cutter over the summer, which will improve print capabilities from the machine further. For more information call 01536 760266, email corrugated@rigid.co.uk or visit www.rigid.co.uk.

The road to understanding

Do you know your rPET from your APET? This simple question prompted several hundred downloads of a technical brochure about different types of film from National Flexible’s website in only a matter of days - confirming an audience desperately in need of technical information in the flexible packaging sector. Over the past 10 years cost reductions have seen numbers of experienced technical staff reduced within supermarkets, film manufacturers, printers and converters. Thus responsibility for quality, innovation and performance in film, print and design has passed further down the supply chain. The result is whilst new product development and packaging innovation are recognised as priorities by most retailers and food manufacturers, design and print innovation are largely ignored with little or no change due to lack of understanding. In light of this, National Flexible are now introducing dedicated training workshops focussing on the technical aspects of packaging films, printing and graphic design. These workshops are designed to not only educate but also to drive change in thinking, thus the content focus is how to improve on what currently exists rather than explain how or why that works. Initial workshops have been over-subscribed and National Flexible are now setting further dates for their ‘Road to Understanding’ training sessions to cater for the demand. The sessions are free to all National Flexible customers, with a nominal fee for any non-customers who also wish to participate. For more information call 01274 685566 or visit www.nationalflexible.co.uk.
