MARCH/APRIL 2012 THE RIDER /65 Tina Irwin Dressage Clinic by Janice Wright

TINA IRWIN who represented Canada at the Pan America Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, win- ning the Team Silver Medal and placing fifth, indi- vidually; also named Dressage Canada Red Scarf Equestrian Athlete for June 2011, recently taught a clinic at Cause for Applause Farms in early Febru- ary. CFAF owned by Miranda Trudeau (nee Thompson) and Nancy Thompson, is a top dressage facility offering lessons for novice to advanced rid- ers in the Peterborough/Norwood area. Tina’s riding principles are based on the “Ger- man training scale” and she is a stickler to details! Tina has a way of interacting with the rider, consis- tently coaching verbally with a strong emphasis on getting what you ask for through proper aids. The horses are respectfully treated by Tina•s calm approach, and she prompts the rider to always thank their horses with a brief rub on the neck, translating a “yes!” to reward the positive.

FEI President Looks Forward To Another 100 Years Of Equestrian Sport In Olympic Movement

The London 2012 Olympic Games marks 100 years of equestrian sport in the Olympic movement, and FEI President HRH Princess Haya is looking forward to celebrating the cen- tenary at Greenwich Park this summer. “We are really proud to be celebrating 100 years of Olympic equestrian sport at the London 2012 Games and it’s wonderful that we will be doing that at an iconic venue like Greenwich Park right in the heart of the Games,” FEI Presi- dent HRH Princess Haya said today. “Greenwich Park is the second largest venue in London 2012 and tickets for the Cross Country were one of the fastest to sell out. Demand has been so high for our sport that tick- ets for all the equestrian disciplines were sold out in a matter of weeks, establishing us as one of the most popular sports in the Games. “This is a real milestone for our sport and is worthy of celebration as it confirms that we are really competing with the other top sports on the number of spectators we can pull in. We’re aspiring to provide one of the top quality prod-

ucts of the Games and we can really say to the big international federations, watch out, we’re here now!

“We have worked tirelessly over the past number of years to ensure that horse sport falls in line with all the IOC requirements, that it is clean, transparent, cost effective and safe. “The IOC conducts a thorough review of the Olympic Games programme after each edi- tion of the Games and of course that applies to all the sports on the programme, not only to equestrian sport.

“Protecting our status in the Olympic Movement is very important to the FEI, and my role as a member of the IOC provides me with the opportunity to promote our sport and our Federation in the future. We have made great strides in the past 100 years and we are now looking forward to another 100 years of eques- trian sport in the Olympic Games.”

Equestrian sport has been part of the Olympic movement since the 1912 Games in Stockholm. It is one of the few Olympic sports

Sweden’s Carl Bonde and Emperor won the individual Dressage gold on home ground in Stockholm at the 1912 Olympic Games.

in which men and women compete against each other and the only one which involves an ani- mal.

Young rider Erika with Danny show great strides

Rider and horse partnerships came away from the clinic as feeling successful in their quest to remedy some problems with their riding. Granted, it takes more than one clinic to perfect the art of dressage (or riding any discipline) and these riders have worked a long time to be at the performance level they are now at.

Clinics are a great way to enhance your riding skills and add goals. By way of observing your horse and your form, valuable feed back can be a way of helping you and your instructor make the most of future lessons. And your horse will thank you, too!
