Chincoteagues in Canada


From the the shores of Virginia to the beauty of Muskoka, a family brings a new breed to Ontario. After reading the clas- sic book Misty of Chin- coteague by Marguerite Henry, the story of a wild pony and the children who love her, a local Brace- bridge family planned their first trip to Chincoteague Island, Virginia. The


In order to comply with the grazing permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Chincoteague Volun- teer Fire Company (who own and care for the hors- es) round them up every July, and sell the foals by auction. All proceeds from the sale provide the small town of Chincoteague’s Vol. Fire Company with new equipment, as well as


the funds needed to ensure and maintain a healthy herd.


In July 2009, the fami- ly spontaneously purchased their first Chincoteague, a bay colt originally chris- tened Mop Top, now offi- cially registered as Chin- coteague Bay Dreamer. Since that summer, they have gained a trailer-full of knowledge on bringing babies home.


Although called the Chincoteague “Pony”, they are really a small breed of horse. They range from 13- 15hh, and are suited for all disciplines. Their friendly, and loving nature makes them easy to gentle, and well suited for children, beginner riders of all ages, and horse lovers in general. They are more than a horse, they quickly become

neighbouring island of Assateague is home to a herd of wild horses, said to have originated from the equine survivors of a ship- wrecked Spanish galleon in the 1700s.


Assateague Island is the ultimate horse lovers vacation destination, wild ponies and a stellar beach attract thousands annually.

A passion for these ponies resulted in the cre- ation of a new business, Chincoteagues in Canada. The goal is to share this amazing breed and intro- duce island born foals to Canada.
