12/ MARCH/APRIL 2012 THE RIDER Outfoxed, The Return To Palouse River

Groundskeeper’s Cottage Press 7th softcover in the Dakotaroo Series www.dakotaroo.com

Review by Kelly Bow- ers

Krista Breen has done it again with anoth- er exciting adventure for TJ, Adrienne, Philip and their friends.

By Krista Michelle Breen

Multidimensional characters, a nail biting storyline, Canadian locations and interesting dialogue make this another great read.

The 7th leg of the Dakotaroo series starts where “Snowfall Sum- mer Cabin” left off with the boys and horses trapped on the side of a

snowy Alberta mountain with two ancient mules in tow. The bad news is the brutal stormed that blew in and is beating down on them and cut- ting them like ice. The good news is that any predator who would eat them is no where to be seen, likely hiding and warmer than they are. And back at Beaverbrook Hall, a new character, California Ross is struggling with her own dire situation. And how did Adrienne get involved? It began with TJ and Adrienne asking the young girl who had entered the barn, “Can I help you?” and turned into her begging them to help her rescue a beloved school pony “Likity”

from a meat auction and certain death. But is this just any pony - Or is there something about this short fat ugly pony and the strange girl that will reduce Adrienne to horse-thievery.

Pesky but brilliant Philip, follows Adrienne to Palouse River on the trail of Dakotaroo. While there, he turns mad scientist, builds a laboratory and dabbles in matching DNA - and everyone is surprised to find out what he learns. Philip is easily my favourite “side kick” of any book series any- where.

One interesting aspect of the book is the background story that is told concurrently. The history that is revealed gradually becomes more important later in the book, so don’t rush through it. So that finally, after six books

of secrecy, we learn juicy details about Mr. Zhang and the mystical appaloosas, much of it from an unlikely source in Palouse River. “Snowflake and Leop- ard, Blanket and Frost, they danced across the sky in every shade of grey, charcoal, roan and bay. Galloping, rear- ing, fighting; the metal in the granite rock made them shine like stars in the sky.” The secret is

out - And it turns out to not be such a secret after all.

Highly recommend for all ages to read. Be sure to start at the begin- ning - with the first book and read them all. And come to Can-Am in London March 16 to 18th. Meet Krista in per- son and she’ll be happy to sign the new book for you. For more informa- tion, see www.dakota- roo.com.
