Bank of America Racing Challenge Races. These will be an excellent opportunity to showcase our Ontario-owned horses, many of which are Ontario-sired! Also, we will be able to show Ajax Downs to the world as the spotlight is thrust upon the track.

- The Ontario Sires Stakes Derby. This advances the very successful Ontario Quarter Horse Stakes Pro- gram. Trails run late July 17 and the Derby itself goes August 7. The Board of Directors thank all who were key to having the Challenge races run at Ajax this year. There was much work done behind the scenes to have these races placed at Ajax. Your efforts are one reason Quarter Horse Rac- ing in Ontario is advancing. Quarter Horse racing returns to Fort Erie again this year with 7 dates throughout the season. June 11, July 2, August 6, September 3, October 3, 6 and 17 will see the real fast horses at the Fort!

Stakes Races being contested – quite a challenge given our relative- ly short racing season in Ontario. Trainers and owners will find their time management and resource management skills put to the test. This is just one other aspect of run- ning Quarter Horses in Ontario. The trainers have always performed in an extraordinary manner to achieve great results for their own- ers, and their fans.

The Annual Members meeting will take place Saturday April 14, 1:00PM. This meeting is closed to members only, and will take place at Ajax Downs, lower level. Belated congratulations go to Joyce and Erik Lehtinen on “The Diamond Side” being named 2011AQHA Canadian Champion. This is the second successive year an Ontario runner has been anointed Canadian Champion. Who will be the third? Come out to Ajax Downs beginning May 13th to see the con- tenders. The year will be very full with Sunday and Tuesday racing at Ajax and action at the Fort!

Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association Launches http://value4money.ca

The Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association has been overwhelmed by the support it has been receiving from indus- try members and the general public over the last two weeks in response to it’s efforts to protect the OLG Slots at Race- tracks Program.

“Phones in our office are ringing off the hooks. We are receiving hundreds of emails a day,” said Sue Leslie, President of the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association. “We wanted to create a sin- gle industry wide website to allow individ- uals to tell the government how they feel, while providing a one stop shop for folks to stay up to date on our activities.” Leslie added.

OHRIA has been busy working with industry members, the general public and government to ensure there is a greater understanding of the Slots at Racetrack Program before the Provincial Budget is announced.

“We were gravely concerned when

Minister Duncan suggested that ending the Slots at Racetrack program would save the government $345 million dollars. The Government’s own numbers show that the program actually generates $1.1 billion dollars for the Government,” said Leslie. http://value4money.ca contains factu- al information about the OLG Slots at Racetrack Program, shares the industry’s economic impact and importance to Ontario’s rural economy, and gives citi- zens tools to engage the Government of Ontario by email with the click of a but- ton.

“We are very happy to provide all concerned Ontarians with a web-based tool that makes emailing all 107 MPPS as easy as typing in your name, email address and postal code,” Said Leslie. “We expect thousands of Ontarians will share their views using this feature.”
