In 2004, Home Hardware Stores Limit- ed celebrated 40 years of commitment and service to community and country. The com- pany is a cooperative wholesaler, owned by over 1,000 independent small business oper- ators from every corner of Canada, who operates under one of its four banners: Home Hardware, Home Hardware Building Centre, Home Building Centre and Home Furniture.

As a testament to Home Hardware’s guiding ethic - that community and the com- mon good is simply good business - the company remains a genuinely 100% Canadi- an, Dealer owned and operated major retail- er.

Home Hardware’s cooperative business model is reflected in every facet of company culture. It is indeed a very large organization of independent businesses, defined by indi- vidual relationships that its network of Deal- ers work tirelessly to nurture - with cus- tomers, community, and each other. The company’s efforts to foster suc- cess, a sense of pride and common purpose, have inspired Home Hardware Dealers to stay in their chosen business, these business- es often being passed down through family generations. Indeed, there are stores that have been in the same family for over a cen- tury - each new generation of owners and customers successively strengthening the bonds of friendship and community. This longevity is also remarkably present among Home Hardware’s dedicated staff, lending tremendously valuable experience and conti- nuity to the company’s daily operations. Suppliers of the thousands of quality products offered by the company are also vital to the success of this nationwide busi- ness community. Their cooperation, innova- tion and collaboration - both at the corporate and Dealer level - have helped Home Hard- ware’s unique company model continue to succeed over time in a challenging industry. Home Hardware operates four distribu- tion centres: St. Jacobs, Ontario; Elmira, Ontario (Home Furniture); Debert, Nova Scotia; and Wetaskiwin, Alberta; approxi- mately 2.5 million square feet of combined

warehousing space holding over 100,000 products. Home Hardware’s distinctive yel- low trucks, trailers and vans - of which there are over 400 - are a common sight on Cana- dian roads traveling from these hubs to make their weekly deliveries to stores across the country. The distribution centres are also home to sophisticated service garages that keep these “yellow birds” in top condition. The company offers over 8,700 exclu- sively-branded products. Beauti-Tone Paint - produced along with many cleaning and sol- vent products at its plant in Burford, Ontario - is just one well-known Home Hardware private-label success story. These Home Hardware branded products offer customers superior quality with economical pricing. A large organization that has never for- gotten its small-town community roots, Home Hardware’s corporate headquarters and its largest distribution centre is located in the scenic village of St. Jacobs, Ontario. Walter Hachborn -one of the compa- ny’s founders - literally “climbed the lad- der,” starting at Hollinger Hardware in 1938 working as a stock boy for $8 per week. When Gordon Hollinger died in 1948, Wal- ter took over many of his mentor’s responsi- bilities, soon purchasing the company in partnership with Henry Sittler and Arthur Zilliax in 1950. It was Walter who spear- headed Home Hardware’s Dealer-owned cooperative model, inspired by the need to address the urgent economic challenges of his fellow retailers, and encouraged by the success of the concept in the United States. Retired from the day-to-day operations since 1988, Walter Hachborn holds the title of President Emeritus. His combination of business acumen, work ethic, ingenuity and kindness, have inspired thousands over the course of his distinguished career. That lead- ership tradition has since passed into the hands of Paul Straus, a long-time employee and member of OQHA, who as President and CEO now guides Home Hardware’s continuing success and community esteem across Canada.

“Home Hardware was created by and for independent Dealers who believed in a

community that would serve the Canadian hardware retail industry’s common good. That kind of principle is as solid a founda- tion as you can have for succeeding in busi- ness, because it attracts good people. Our Dealers - and everyone else who works for Home Hardware - are driven by more than just the bottom line. They care about build- ing friendships, helping people and serving their communities. That spirit is what defines Home Hardware on the Canadian retail landscape” (Walter Hachborn)

Community and charity are values close to home

Home Hardware Dealers and their staff have made the company one of Canada’s most esteemed corporate citizens; by their nature, Home Dealers are civic leaders who positively shape the lives of others. One tra- dition that says a great deal about company values is the foregoing of a Christmas gift exchange among staff, in favour of support- ing local agencies that in turn brighten the holidays for families in need. Employees at the company’s major distribution centres hold food drives twice yearly to support local food banks, and are major supporters of other local charities and the United Way. There are also a number of other charitable events that Home Hardware supports and as we speak about the generosity of this great company, the Ontario Quarter Horse Associ- ation knows all to well of their kindness charitable traditions.

Home Hardware has been a long time supporter of the Ontario Quarter Horse Association. They are a continued sponsor of the Ontario Quarter Horse Breeders futu- rity and the Ontario Quarter Horse Youth Association and wherever there is a silent auction of some sort held at our shows, you can be sure that there will be a number of Home Hardware items for you to bid on. The Ontario Quarter Horse Association would like to take this opportunity to thank Home Hardware for their generosity and support. Our members, exhibitors and vol- unteers truly appreciate your kindness.

OQHA Member Turns Author!

Twenty three years ago, Tanya Patterson introduced her- self as a youth competitor and became an AQHA and OQHA member. She was a shy kid who was known for being the girl in red with the little grey mare. Twenty three years later she is still the horse crazy girl but it is her son who does much of the showing. Tanya has been a horse trainer for the past nine years and, with help, runs a boarding facility with 30 (or more) horses, offering lessons, training and a breeding program, with AQHA superior western pleasure stal- lion Awesome Mister Te. For anyone who knows Tanya, she is still, and probably always will be into horses and showing. Some of you who knew Tanya a bit better may have noticed she always carried a notebook - and was always writing. Recently her writing tal- ents have come to light and Tanya recently published her first book.

Her book “Finding the Good”, is a fiction novel about a young girl and her quarter horse. Jackie is a young girl who has a

love for animals, especially hors- es. She, like any other teen, has wants of new clothes, popular items, friendship, and love. She wants to enjoy her teenage life, wants to experience her first love, her first kiss…but an alco- holic family member makes it difficult – if not impossible. She turns to the only one that under- stands – her horse Texas – but when he is gone, she has nowhere else to turn. She runs away from home hoping to stay under the radar until her eigh- teenth birthday when she could

legally do what she wants. She sets her sights on a small town in Ontario and a scholarship to Vet- erinary school. With little money and no desire to be noticed she gets a job at a local farm. Her need to be near horses and do what she loved was just as important as making it on her own. What she didn’t plan on was falling for local boy, Dusty Houghton, nor did she plan to run into the very reason she left, her beloved horse, Texas. Jackie set out determined to stay guard- ed but soon finds it hard to keep the horse and the boy from occu- pying a place in her heart; not to mention a puppy who becomes a much needed friend. She strug- gles with the need to keep her identity hidden, getting her beloved horse back and follow- ing her dreams….a tragic acci- dent changes everything and Jackie struggles to ‘Find the Good’ in all that is happening. Twenty years ago, Tanya would have never imagined her- self blogging, using twitter and managing her own facebook account, but her publicist keeps telling her that this is all part of

the marketing strategy so she is keeping up with the new age of technology and you can now visit Tanya’s blog (http://tanyap- atterson.authorsxpress.com) and join her on facebook to keep up on what this author is doing and if there is another book in the works.

OQHA would like to con- gratulate Tanya on her accom- plishment and thank her for including the wonderful Quarter Horse in her novel! We are sure it will be extremely popular to the many horse loving teens. Tanya will be doing a book signing at the upcoming Can-Am in the OQHA booth. Be sure drop by and visit Tanya and OQHA!
