56/ MARCH/APRIL 2012 THE RIDER The Carriage Driver Eastern Ontario Pleasure Driving Society News

President’s Message: With the warm sun streaming in my window as I write this, I can’t help but think ‘spring’ and a new driving season will soon be upon us.

EOPDS board of direc- tors had a meeting last week to plan the 2012 season. Please check out the full cal- endar in this newsletter and then mark the dates on which you would like to par- ticipate.

I would like to draw your attention to two items. One is our clinic. We decid- ed to limit ourselves to one for this year as we had such difficulty in filling our class- es in two last year. We sim- ply don’t think the demand is there for two. Remember me saying “use them or lose them”.

Well, the same applies to the clinic this year so get those applications in early. The form will be on our website. We have a new venue this year on Bankfield Road, which we know you will enjoy.

repeats of the ‘tried and true’ from other years. At this time, I notice that our club has 52 members and 40 who were members last year and have yet to join this year. I encourage you to get your membership form in to Barry Beach as soon as pos- sible. I also realize that only a small percentage of our members actually take an active part in our events. We’d love to increase these numbers so if you know of a way that we could help to get you “kick-started”, please let us know and we’ll do our best.

Hope to see you all at our AGM, which is the first event this year. – Mary Mulligan

A Salute to EOPDS By Janet Noyes-Brown I would like to thank all the EOPDS board of direc- tors and volunteers for all the hard work they put in “out front” and behind the scenes in 2011 to make our club so successful and fun. Special thanks to Mary Mul- ligan for the four years of being President and to both Ian and Mary for the many events they have hosted at their beautiful farm. These events have given us the opportunity to improve our driving skills, to share knowledge and receive encouragement from other members.

Also, a big thank you to Wayne Byrne and Barry Beach for organizing the very informative Jeff Kohler clinic at Sunset Farm. It was good to see many newcom- ers wanting to learn more about carriage driving. Last but not least, thank you Jen- nifer and Rob Rennie, and June Pelot for feeding us so well at this event!

I hope the EOPDS members will support the new board and make 2012 another successful year

bursaries to family members who have an interest in car- riage driving. The intent of the bursaries is to provide funding for professional training to young members up to the age of 21 years. The success of the pro- gram depends on the support of family and/or mentors who have a horse or pony that is suitable for driving. The club arranges annual clinics, which give members access to professional clini- cians.

Tri-County Driving Association News

Tri-County members support sport pony show circuit in 2011.

At present, three young drivers are participating in the program. All three are very involved in carriage driving, and are well sup- ported by their families and mentors. They are also very successful not only in recre- ational driving, but in recog- nized competitions. Pleasure driving is a sport where young drivers are very wel- come as the hope is that they will carry on the tradition of carriage driving in their future life.

Interested members should ensure that they renew their membership in EOPDS and include a young driver, who has aspirations to join in this sport, in a family membership.

There has been a significant growth in the popularity of the Sport Pony shows since 2005. In 2011 several Tri-County members actively showed their ponies at the Sport Pony Shows – on the line, under saddle and in harness with great results. • Carole Partridge showed Simon the Magician at many sport pony shows in 2011 with great results. • Kirsten Brunner had several ponies qualify on the circuit and Beaverwood King Fisher won the stal- lion class in the Sport Pony division at the Royal. • Vicki Cork won at the Royal with a lovely sport pony mare – Northwind Corporate Affair. • Kerrie Norcott and Carl McNicoll showed several ponies owned by Jane Southgate during the sum- mer. Bennos Hit won the gelding class and went on to be the Overall Sport Pony Champion at the Royal.

The Royal is considering offering a driving division for the Sport Ponies in the future. In 2012 several sport pony shows will offer driving classes along with line and riding classes. Currently Cale- don Fair, Beaverwood’s PBO, Arthur Fair, Milton Fair!and Brampton Fair offer driving classes open to Sport ponies.

More sport pony shows may offer driving classes but their programs haven’t been finalized yet. These classes are open to all ponies not just ponies from registered breeds.

Further information is available from Margaret Monnelly by email at mon- nelly@magma.ca or by phone 613-825-3853.

More information about the shows can be found at Pony Breeders of Ontario website or the Royal Winter Fair. We need more driving competi- tors at these shows to demonstrate to the Royal that this is a valid class for the Sport Pony division. Please consider attending with your ponies as the shows are great fun. For additional information you can contact Diana Macdonald at Pony Breeders of Ontario (dimac99@hotmail.com) or any of the above Tri County members.
