Dufferin Forest Proposal
Many equestrians who enjoy trail- riding are familiar with the excellent trail system in the Dufferin Forest Mansfield Tract. It is an area about 1 hour drive north of Toronto’s Pearson Airport comprising approximately 1000 acres, adjacent to Simcoe Forest with additional hundreds of acres. The trails are mostly sandy base which makes them ideal for early spring riding and riding thru the summer season to the end of September without mud or insects even during rainy weather. The terrain is a variety of pine stands, mature forest, maple bush, oaks, rasp- berry patches, rolling and hilly, and the maze of trails range from single width to logging roads.
Riders Association compiled a proposal for development of a primitive horse campground in a section of the forest to provide permanent overnight campsites for equestrians in conjunction with use of the trails. The proposal outlined a basic campground facility providing stalls or corrals and water hydrants for horse use, along with highway signage, campground signage, manure pit, mounting block and hitching rails optional. A second alternative proposed a washroom building to be included in a campground. The proposals were to rely on grant funding or alternate fundrais- ing.
The forest management has wel- comed equestrian use for as long as I can remember, and even more so since the closure about 15 years ago of the Youth Correctional Centre facility that was located in the forest. Over the years the forest has been available for day use riding and organized trail rides such as fundraising rides, breed organization trailrides, competitive trail riding and O.T.R.A. trail rides.
During the past year Ontario Trail
available on the web site
www.otra.ca . We still have a few rides to confirm.
Ontario Trail Riders Association’s Booth will be going to Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo at Burlington’s Iron Horse Equestrian Complex on June 8th to 10th as well as “All About Horses” in Lindsay May 26 & 27.

Trail News
O.T.R.A. has been advised that the County of Dufferin did not vote to approve this proposal. Perhaps at a future date an equestrian campground proposal can be submitted again. O.T.R.A. and all equestrians may continue to enjoy the forest for its day use rides and organized trail rides. The Board encourages riders to visit Duf- ferin Forest, enjoy the trails, take good care of the trails and show the County of Dufferin that horseback riders appre- ciate the forest.
The pilot project of equestri- an trails in Wiarton is moving for- ward nicely. This fall they hope to have ready 8 km and more development each year. A notice will go out when the grand open- ing is scheduled. OTRA has donated the signage for the trails; just follow the horse and rider. There will be several watering areas and I have spoken to a campground across from the trail- head that is interested in allowing equestrian camping. The local rid- ers are excited to get involved

with the project. I can’t say where the campground and entrance to the trails are yet, there is still work to be done before we all show up to explore. I will be going back up in the spring to see the progress been made and meet with the locals as there is a large horse population there. In the end we hope to have trails that will accommodate the carriage drivers as well as the trail riders. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress.

Sending In The Clown: The Return Of Shorty Leggs
Back by popular demand, Shorty Leggs was one of the best known clowns in South- ern Ontario and spent nearly 15 years making audiences in Ontario laugh through his one liners and crazy antics. After retiring in 2010, the bug has caught him once again. The URT is happy to announce that Shorty Leggs will make his return to rodeo arenas in South- ern Ontario this coming summer as part of the brand new Ultimate Rodeo Tour. Shorty is excited to entertain the crowds here on the new circuit. His never ending jokes, antics and acts are a great time for all that has seen them. But in today’s sport of professional rodeo, protecting bull riders from serious injury or death is no joking matter. Shorty is dead serious about saving the cowboy, and often will place his own life in jeopardy to do so.
Encore Trick Riding Team Explodes On The Ultimate Rodeo Tour
Ask anyone what the hottest act on the Rodeo Tour was in the 2011 season and you’ll likely hear about the ENCORE Trick Riding Performance Team. These girls know how to make a crowd erupt with cheers. Its a fast paced multiple rider – rapid fire approach that has to be seen to be believed. Not only will the Encore Team shock the crowd with dangerous tricks but they will also serve as a well polished colour guard at all Ultimate Rodeo Tour performances. This team has per- formed at the RAM Rodeo Tour Champi- onships, and the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. Their athleticism will bring excitement to the crowds.
