Q1. Where did the moniker “Insurance Guy” come from? A1. I have been involved in the horse industry for more than 40 years – riding, training, competing, teaching, judging etc. I seem to have seen just about all of it – and for the last 20 years I have been a dedicated insurance broker specializing in the development and delivery of horse related insurance products and services across Canada. I am proud to say that over the years my articles regarding insurance have appeared in a variety of publi- cations in and outside of Canada. I have also participated in many public speaking Q&A sessions on equine related insurance matters. Those experiences have provided me with a depth of knowledge in this specialized field that I love to share with others.


Q2. Intercity Insurance has been the official insurance provider to OEF and their members for over a decade. To what, do you attribute this long lasting relationship?

A2. When we introduced this insurance program to the OEF they had a very different member- ship base with roughly 4,500 members. Over the years we have worked very hard in the community to develop a broad based service to address a grow- ing and changing equine community. The partnership with OEF was, and still is, one of the best ways to share Interci- ty’s expertise. Our partnership with the OEF has proven to be a success story from all accounts where all stakeholders have benefitted. The current 2012 OEF membership with over 20,000 individu- als is proof of this success.


Q3. How have the needs of the member- ship changed over the years?

A3. When we started offering insurance to the equine community, the main issue was about the liability arising from the use and ownership of horses. A survey of members conducted in the fall of 2010 shows this continues to be the most common concern. What has evolved is the indisputable reliance on Intercity Insurance Services to continue to pro- vide valuable resources and risk man- agement solutions. We have done that by offering affordable products and ser- vices as requested by the equine com- munity we serve and will continue to do so for years to come.

In 2012, the community can take advantage of many new products that have been specifically designed for the unique needs of the equine enthusiast. For example, in response to numerous inquiries we now offer a product that provides Weekly Accident Indemnity (income replacement) insurance.


Q4. Where do you foresee the industry going from here?


A4. We can see significant changes coming within the horse industry in the province and across Canada in the com- ing years. Our position in the equine world means we have had continuous discussions with stakeholders across the country to prepare for these changes. We are fully prepared and committed to our thousands of clients in providing contin- uous and innovative risk management and insurance solutions. “Clients Come First”.
