I am honored to introduce myself as the 2012 Ontario Quarter Horse Association President. I’m looking for- ward to working with the 2012 OQHA board of directors to provide our mem- bership a great year.

I have enjoyed horses for many years, growing up as a horse crazy kid, begging my parents to buy me a pony at a young age. Fortunately for me they agreed, and I have been lucky enough to have been able to continue with my horse passion ever since. I purchased my first quarter horse 30 years ago, a 2 yo grandson of Two Eyed Jack, and owned him up until his passing at the ripe old age of 32. It wasn’t long ago; I was your typical grass roots horse enthusiast. I enjoyed having my horses,

trail rode, showed at some open shows and fairs, but a trip to the Quarter Horse Congress changed all that. It wasn’t long before I bought a mare that I showed and eventually bred. I have since showed halter horses across Ontario and throughout the US includ- ing Congress and the AQHA World Show, with one of my proudest accom- plishments, recently winning an Ama- teur Reserve World Championship at the 2011 OQHA World Show in Aged Geldings.

I have been involved with my area promotional club, serving as a director on the Eastern Ontario Quarter Horse association and later as Vice President and President. I have been involved with the OQHBF for 5 years, and became a director on the OQHA board

in 2009 and served as the OQHA News Publisher for the past 3 years.

I am passionate about the Ontario Quarter Horse Association, and can assure the membership that together with the OQHA directors, we will work hard for our association in 2012. OQHA wants to hear from you! We want to know what you want from OQHA, your concerns, your suggestions and how OQHA could better serve you. I will be attending many of the OQHA shows throughout the year, so stop me for a chat, or give me a call as I want to be involved with our members and look forward to hearing from you.

I am very excited about the upcom- ing year and am fortunate to have a strong OQHA directorship, with lots of new ideas for the coming year. We are currently working on a number of initia- tives that we hope will be of interest to our members. Some of these include:

added membership benefits; new OQHBF rules opening up eligibility of horses; building partnerships with other breed associations and the Ontario Quar- ter Horse Racing; initiatives to promote our professional trainers, Ontario horses and exhibitors; additional OQHA pro- motion through facebook and twitter; enhancements to the OQHA Website, just to name a few.

As spring quickly approaches, I hope you continue to enjoy spending time with your Quarter Horses, and wish everyone the best of luck this show sea- son and hope to see you at an event this year!

In closing, I would like to thank all our members, exhibitors, sponsors, trainers and volunteers for their support of our association. Without you all, we would not exist. We truly appreciate your dedication and support of the Ontario Quarter Horse Association.

Why not join OQHA... Your AQHA affiliate

I know many of us ask ourselves, why I should purchase an OQHA Mem- bership?

Many of us think that the only rea- son we would need to purchase a mem- bership is to compete for yearend awards, but that isn’t necessarily true. Membership sales are the main source of income for OQHA. This income is used for the day to day operations of our association. When you chose to support the parent association, this in turn allows us to continue to provide AQHA approved shows and trail rides in Ontario. OQHA also helps promote the versatile American Quarter Horse by publishing the Ontario Quarter Horse

News magazine, advertising our associa- tion news in Equine publications like “The Rider”, attending events through- out Ontario such as the Can-Am Equine Emporium, the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto Horse Fair and many other horse related events each year. OQHA reaches out to the grass roots of our industry by offering “Rising Star” and “Ambassador” programs. We offer Novice shows, clinics, and a futurity for our members to promote their offspring. We recently opened up our futurity to include all-breeds in hopes of narrowing the gap between other associations. The benefits of promoting the Quarter horse to other horse enthusiasts may in turn

help our members sell horses, increase awareness of our shows which may increase attendance, and potentially cre- ate business for our professional horse- men and women.

The objectives and purposes of the Ontario Quarter Horse Association is to promote the American Quarter Horse breed through educational, sporting activities, which in turn encourage pub- lic interest in the Quarter Horse through public showings, sport, and pleasure. This will continue to develop leadership, community interest and participation among amateur, youth and the general membership. Also encouraging a higher moral character, sportsmanship, animal

welfare, and keen competition amongst its members.

Without your provincial affiliate, Ontario members would no longer have access to AQHA approved shows within the province, and our exhibitors would be forced to show elsewhere. There wouldn’t be amateur or youth associa- tions or promotional clubs, there would be no avenue at the provincial level to our parent associations, AQHA and CQHA. This in turn would affect the Quarter Horse Industry as a whole, and you, our members.

So when you chose to support Continued on Page 39
