£11,000 - £16,000 The first-generation Range Rover

was produced between 1970 and 1996. The original car was not designed as a luxury-type 4x4; whilst certainly up-market compared to preceding Land Rover models, the early Range Rovers had fairly basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose. Convenience features such as power assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth/leather seats and wooden interior trim were fitted later. From the 1960s until the mid-1980s they were built as campers, tactical command posts, etc and where fitted, the elevating roof, which allowed a person to stand inside the vehicle, rose vertically without hinging. The army ordered 34 of them and called them the Tactical Command Posts. However in 1971 Carawagon transformed a Range Rover on the base of an existing vehicle (EPK800J) which was examined by the engineers at Land Rover in March 1971. It had some shortcomings compared to the 109’s; internal space was shorter by 7”, the spare wheel was carried inside and it was fitted with a smaller roof with only 5ft 4inches standing height instead of the standard full roof.

Only very few Range Rovers were converted; probably due to the price of £3,040 compared to £2,450 for a 109 conversion with 4 beds, although they were still available in sales lists until 1980. Carawagon closed down in the mid-1980s. This 1978 Range Rover Carawagon was ordered and supplied

to Sir Jimmy Savile OBE, KCSG, disc jockey and television presenter, to aid him with his charity work, so when necessary he was able to remain on site and live at the location of the project. The car was registered to his home just outside the walls of Broadmoor Hospital at 13 The Terrace, Crowthorne, Surrey but the vendor believes that this Range Rover spent much of its time parked at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, an institution that benefitted hugely from Sir Jimmy’s patronage. Finished in white, this Carawagon is fitted with a double bed, and comes with a wash basin fitted between the front seats and curtains. The car is supplied with a V5C registration document, a new MoT test certificate and copies of the original V5’s showing that he owned the vehicle until 1983. Sadly, Sir Jimmy passed away recently, although he will long be remembered as much for his myriad eccentricities, as for his radio work and his relentless campaigning for the many charities he involved himself in. The world is left a poorer place in his absence and his Range Rover is a suitable epitaph for someone who might want to remain on duty, but in comfort.

Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Buyers are advised to inspect the car in person or use a professional to carry out this service.
