£12,000 - £18,000 The Chrysler New Yorker was a premium model built by the


Chrysler Corporation from 1939 to 1996 and serving for several years as the brand’s flagship model. A model named the ‘New York Special’ first appeared in the 1930s until its discontinuation in 1996; the New Yorker had made, by then, its mark as the longest running American car model. During the New Yorker’s tenure, it also competed against models from Buick, Oldsmobile, Lincoln, and Mercury. The New Yorker was available in 1938 as a four door sedan with a 323 CID straight eight and a generous amount of comfort and space to the passengers. 1940 also saw the introduction of Fluid Drive, a fluid coupling between the engine and the clutch. The only transmission available was the basic three-speed manual. Totally new bodies were introduced for 1941 with the business coupé now being of


the three window design. Unlike most car companies, Chrysler did not make changes with each model year from 1946 to the first series of 1949. Thus models for 1946 through 1949 Chryslers have the same basic appearance, noted for their ‘harmonica’ grille, based on the body introduced with the 1941 models. This superbly original New Yorker was imported into the UK in


1952 by the custodian of the vehicle in the U.S. Before being posted back to the UK, the owner, being a resourceful character, filled the car with goods not readily available in the UK and put the car on an aircraft carrier! Owner and car arrived on 30th August 1952 at Liverpool; the Chrysler was registered in the UK on 1st September 1952 and driven to London where it was used as a family car until 1959. The New Yorker was then taken to Belfast where it was stored for eight years before returning to England in 1967 where, once again, it was put into storage. In 1987, the car was re-commissioned and began a ‘new lease of life’ having at that stage covered a mere 28,000 miles with the buff log book still available. The current vendor purchased the car from Historics in June 2010 and has had immense enjoyment from the car. Sadly due to lack of space, he is no longer able to store the car and has decided to let a new owner enjoy her. Described as being both ‘interesting and fun’ to drive, the fluid-drive transmission operates as it should. This is a rare Chrysler New Yorker, in original condition, and whatever your wishes, this is a unique opportunity to purchase a car with real presence.
