Venturi Automobiles built mid engine sports cars in France under the name of MVS (Manufacture de Voitures de Sport). The first Venturi came out in 1984, created by Claude Poiraud and Gérard Godfroy, two former engineers at Heuliez. The goal was to present the only ‘Grand Tourisme’ French car capable of competing with the French Bugatti, the Italian Ferrari, and the German Porsche. The headquarters of the company were located in Couëron, Pays de Loire, where almost 750 cars were produced over a 20 year period. From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, they built mid-engined coupés and roadsters with turbocharged PRV engines and Renault gearboxes. A limited edition 400GTR was also built for racing homologation
requirements and later used in the 24 Hours du Mans. Venturi was also briefly involved with the Larrousse Formula One team. The team’s 1992 car, which bore the Venturi name, was designed and built by Venturi Larousse UK, a British company formerly known as Fomet 1, which had previously designed the 1991 Fondmetal Formula One cars. Although a limited number production run of the 200 series arrived on British shores, the Venturi name is firmly stamped upon the French subconscious. The design is of classic proportions with attention paid to shut lines, build quality,
interior trim and performance. With fully adjustable electric seats, a full leather interior and walnut dashboard, the interior is a very special place to be. Double wish bones, Koni shocks and springs equip the corners; an expensive option but a welcome one as this is very much a driver’s car. Rare mid-engined sports cars are something to treasure and the asking prices does not reflect this extremely fine example. Originally imported new in 1988 and acquired by the vendor that
same year from ‘British Motors’ of Park Lane, London, this model has remained his property right up until now (with the exception of nine mo nths in 1996). Serviced regularly by the vendor, himself the MSA British Historic Stage Rally Champion in 2009, 2010 and 2011, his knowledge is encyclopedic and the overall condition is extremely good throughout as you would expect. It comes complete with a quantity of original promotional literature as well as invoices, bills and an MoT test certificate valid until December 2012. Bespoke sportscars of this pedigree and quality are often compared to market rivals such as the Lotus Esprit, Ferrari 308 and Lamborghini Uracco. Interestingly, all fell short when this was launched…
