The Fiat 500 is a car produced by the Fiat Company of Italy between 1957 and 1975, with limited production of the Fiat 500 Giardiniera estate continuing until 1977. The car was designed by Dante Giacosa, and despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular vehicle throughout Europe capturing the hearts and minds of the public. Launched as the Nuova (new) 500 in July 1957 it was marketed as a cheap and practical town car. Measuring only 3 metres long, and originally powered by a tiny 479 cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 redefined the term ‘small car’ and is considered one of the first city cars. Besides the two-door coupé, it was also available as the
‘Giardiniera’ estate car; this variant featured the standard engine laid on its side, the wheelbase lengthened by four inches which yielded a usable rear seat, a full-length sunroof and larger brakes from the Fiat 600. Production of the 500 ended in 1975 although its replacement, the Fiat 126, was launched two years earlier. The 126 was never as popular as its predecessor in Italy but became enormously popular in the former Eastern Bloc countries where it was famed for its mechanical durability and high fuel economy. This 1968 Fiat 500 Giardiniera has recently been repainted
in white with a new sunshine roof fitted. The speedometer is reading 35,500 miles which the vendor believes to be correct. The interior of the car is completely original with the front seats completely unmarked and finished in brown. The car is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate valid until the end of September 2012 and a letter from Fiat Auto (UK) confirming the manufacturing date and the chassis number. A small fun, fashionable, classic car which can grace many
events from Goodwood’s Breakfast Sundays to Brooklands’ Auto Italia Day.
