NOW’S THE TIME TO BUY LAPTOPS!

There have been some seriously good offers on laptops over the summer – and we continue to see competitive pricing on top brands. So, if you are tempted to upgrade your current machine, what should you look for?

CHOOSING A LAPTOP - There are essentially three aspects you should compare.

1. The Processor (also known as a Chip or CPU)

This is the most important to get right as you cannot change it! There are two manufacturers of processors – Intel and AMD. Intel’s new “Core i” range offers the i3, i5 and i7 processors. Below that, the Intel Pentium Dual Core and Core 2 Duo range offer fast processing performance. Buy the best processor in your budget range. Cheaper laptops will probably have a slower budget processor such as the single core Intel Celeron chip.

2. Hard Drive – Look for 250GB or above This is where all your information and

programs are stored. Buy the biggest you can afford with your budget. Most are sold with a minimum of 250GB which is fine for most computer users.

3. Memory – The More the Better Memory is like fuel for a computer. The

more you have, the faster it will be. Look for a minimum of 2GB, aim for 3GB or 4GB. Memory is easily and quite cheaply added at any time.

All laptops should have Windows 7, be wireless and have a Dual Layer DVD rewriter as standard. Screens range from 15.6” to 17.2”. We would always recommend buying a good quality brand such as Toshiba, Compaq or Acer.

There is now more choice than ever in the sub £400 market. For a time over the summer we were supplying laptops such as the Acer Aspire with a Core i3 processor, 3GB memory and a 320GB hard drive for under £380!

Don’t Forget Security The Autumn is always a bad time for viruses

and malware. We are recommending that all systems should have a full security suite installed to give full antivirus, anti-malware, firewall protection and online security. Norton internet Security and AVG Internet Security offer great protection.
