he re-building of the fire-damaged shops and flats between Higher Street and Fairfax Place does create something of a bottleneck. It would be a pity if that discouraged visitors and indeed residents to venture further to the cafés, pubs and shops between Fairfax Place and the Lower Ferry/Bayards Cove. Just in case, we asked a few of these businesses to provide a quick snapshot of what’s new or happening for them during September and early October.

Annabelle’s Kitchen (24 South Embankment, 833540) reopened in August 2010 under new owners Joanna Crane and John Hodgson. Jo and John have since become active participants in such events as the Food Festival and the South Devon Crab Festival. their restaurant prides itself on offering reasonably priced, yet elegantly presented modern british cooking, using the best of local and seasonal produce – see advert on page 28. Compass Books (Bayards Cove, 835915) As well as a wide selection of second-hand books, Compass now offers a new range of beautifully bound notebooks and journals, these are also available on their new website www.

Much of Danielli’s winter stock has now been delivered and is proving popular. new suppliers have been sourced from Paris with colour blocks on dresses and tunics (which can be layered over trousers) very much on trend. Picking up on the Kate Middleton style, new wrap dresses by ‘ingenue’ have been hugely successful nationally and are now in stock in sizes up to 18-20 – very figure flattering. winter boots are due in by mid September. showing new work from the popular Amanda Hoskin, Cyril Croucher and Colin Giſts for Gentlemen
Kent. in the meantime, they’re showing new paintings by Michael Ashcroft and a new print of burgh island by Stewart edmonson has been much in demand. See advert on page 67. Dartmouth Apprentice (St Barnabas Church, Newcomen Road, 837820) is South Devon’s only training restaurant for the long-term unemployed. As well as good food during the day and evening, they’ve become an increasingly popular venue for special events taking full advantage of this fascinating building enjoying great views over the river. next up is the “baz Sings Swing” on October 1st
