After Oxford, Father Will was ordained as a priest and moved to Bristol to work as a curate under the parish priest. He spent three years there, in an inner city and suburban parish, before his move to Ivor Heath. Although Father Will chose the church over mechanical engineering, he is still a self-confessed “fixer” of cars and engines. He owns a classic 1971 Alfa Romeo Spider, which will no doubt be arriving at the vicarage soon. He said: “I get a massive buzz after fixing stuff. My poor wife gets exasperated at times – I won’t replace electrical items before I’ve had a good go at fixing them.” His practical skills got him around Australia in a $250 (£180) car, which he kept going for the whole nine months of his trip. In Australia he also helped out with boat engines in return for sailing trips, and is “itching” to tinker with a boat again now he’s in Dartmouth. I get the feeling Father Will and his family are going to fit in really well.

They plan to get very involved in community groups, schools and other organisations in the parish as well as within the church.

He added: “Gone are the days when you can expect people to just walk through the doors of church. People want the church there at key moments in their life – weddings and funerals – and to offer hope that that isn’t the end of life.

“The challenge of the church today is how to attract second and third generations of people who have no faith upbringing. “We need to show we have something to offer, something of importance in the here and now, not just an insurance for the next world.”
