• staff the bar during live performances. Another volunteers said: ‘this can be busy but is definitely enjoyable, particularly as you get to meet the stars close up. i have had a drink with comics eddie izzard and Arthur Smith, and served Midge Ure – all enormous fun!’ • act as stewards for the cinema and at live events – this involves collecting tickets, showing people to their seats, selling refreshments and sitting in on shows to make sure customers are happy. it can be done at a time convenient to the individual and you can choose which events to help with – it’s a great way to help out. • assist our marketing team with promoting the Flavel by distributing leaflets, updating our web presence and putting up posters. Agwain, something that can be easily arranged around any current commitments. • support our experienced technical team with lighting and sound at performances, or back stage. • undertake regular general maintenance and simple DiY jobs. if you are handy with a hammer or paintbrush this role could suit you well.

The Flavel is a fantastic venue offering an amazingly varied programme, attracting people of all ages from our local community as well as visitors to the town. With its live events, cinema, gallery, café, library and meeting rooms, it has become a hub for cultural life in Dartmouth and the surrounding villages since it opened over six years ago. The modern building in Flavel Place is open throughout the year and is run by a small team of dedicated staff, alongside a large number of active volunteers - an indispensible part of the team.

now the Flavel is looking to recruit additional volunteers; so if you love live theatre, music, opera, art, comedy, film or simply meeting people. there are a wide variety of openings and you don’t need any previous experience as training is given so, whatever your background, why not contact us? For example, we are currently looking to recruit volunteers to:

• help at the front desk with selling tickets, handling enquiries and answering the phone. Volunteers should not be put off by the till operation for, as one of our regulars said: ‘the till thinks for you now and plenty of hands-on training is given with the Duty Manager always available if there is a query. A volunteer is never left on his or her own. reception work is usually done in pairs and is a good way to meet local people and holiday-makers alike’.

• lend a hand with fundraising events, from tea dances to a stall in Mayors Avenue gardens. this all helps the Flavel meet its charitable aims to put on a broad programme of events. Apart from being part of a tremendous team and meeting new friends it is an opportunity to give something back to the community and support your local arts centre.
