Dartmouth and the roads of South Devon are back to their usual state of congestion. That can mean only one thing; it’s almost time for Food Festival 2011, the next big thing in the Dartmouth calendar.

And will it be big? Of course it will! The amazingly energetic, enthusiastic and good natured Festival team have been beavering away to make sure that we continue to build on the success of the past few years and create an even more exciting event. Chefs from near and far are lining up to appear, the markets are oversubscribed with traders wanting to promote their products and the programme is busier than ever.
MARKET HIGHLIGHTS:
As always this year’s market will feature the best of the West Country and South Devon and there will be a fabulous range of produce all selected for quality by Holly. Of course we’ll have old favourites such as the SOUTH DEVON CHILLI FARM, ASHRIDGE CIDER, and TOM’S PIES; there’d be trouble if we didn’t, but we’ll be introducing new traders to the market so you won’t be getting a feeling of déjà vu.
Some to look out for: ELLA MOONEY, a14 year old food entrepreneur from Exeter, will be launching her brand, Ella’s Great Granola at the Festival. Ella has attended several classes with us at Manna from Devon and we are delighted to be supporting her launch.
PROSPECT BOOKS - Tom Jaine from Blackawton will be bringing a range of books about cookery, food history and the ethnology of food all published by his own company, Prospect Books.
FOUNTAIN VIOLET OMELETTE BAR – this will be a first outing for Edward Jones from Kingswear using eggs from his free range, organic flock. We use nothing else at the cookery school so we highly recommend you try one.
This will be my fourth year as chairman and I’m delighted that each year more people come on board to help run the Festival, more sponsors are willing to pitch in, more chefs are happy to demonstrate their skills and more producers ask to be allowed to trade. This is all testament to the success of previous years, the great media coverage we get both locally and nationally and the amount of sheer hard work that goes into making it happen. Next month’s By The Dart will have a whole pull out section exclusively dedicated to the Festival so this month I just want to flag up a few of the exciting things happening which you might want to put in your diaries or book in advance for.
PERADON ORGANIC – Jon and Louise have achieved great success with their multi award winning organic lamb and beef burgers. Taste them on the Embankment.
SEVERN AND WYE SMOKERY – Smoking mackerel and more on site to eat on the spot or take home. Great smells and you can see the whole process happening.
RADLEY CROSS MARKET GARDEN will bring a wide selection of Devon grown Garlic.
RED DOG BAKERY – Recently established in Black Torrington, Roger will be bringing a range of delicious Sourdough Breads
CHUNK OF DEVON – Fast becoming a super brand, Chunk of Devon are taking over the world one meat stuffed mouthful of pie at a time. And they’re owned by local chap Simon Bryon-Edmond who can often be seen sailing his scimitar on the river in his spare time.
DARTMOUTH ARCHITECTS, ROBERT SEYMOUR AND ASSOCIATES are sponsoring a prize for the best stall this year. This should help to raise the bar even further and the winner will have to have shown an impressive combination of stall presentation, quality produce and customer service.
