MARCH/APRIL 2011 THE RIDER /77 Grey Mares Equine Is Pat’s Passion By Kelly Bowers
Pat Biesbrouck was born and raised in Bayfield ON, spent more than a quarter of a century in the Waterloo region raising her own children before moving back to Bayfield to build her dream horse farm. Last September she moved to Glen Allen to be closer to her adult children and grandkids in Waterloo, and that is where her new venture started.
Her professional history does not hint at her current busi- ness interests. She owned sev- eral hair salons across Ontario for over 28 years and later worked in retail. It is her pas- sion that directed Pat towards her decision to create a new product. Pat has loved horses her whole life and remembers fondly riding a neighbours palomino weekly with her grandpa. Eventually she was given a pony of her own at 9 yrs of age and buying her first horse at 14. She hadn’t ridden in decades but once her kids had grown, her love of horses resur- faced and she got herself onto a horse farm.
Pat needed more shelter space in the pasture at her farm. She had just had new fences installed which meant access was blocked. So, she designed a shed that could be assembled in her pasture rather than being transported prebuilt. The pro- ject was so successful that she decided to market them. She designed a line of sturdy well-
built shelters that could be installed without any cutting or special tools required. The kit came complete and was designed to be easy enough to assemble in a couple hours by one person and portable enough to move in a pickup truck when the owner does. She was confi- dent the competitively priced shed would be popular with countless single horse owners, hobby farmers and gardeners. The shed kits are manu- factured locally in Waterloo. They can be delivered anywhere but the convenience of this design is that buyers can pick the kit up in their own truck or trailer- and assemble it quickly and easily on the spot you want it -unlike pre-fab buildings that need to be dropped from a trans- port truck by large lifting equip- ment. If you want to see an assembled unit, a network of select dealers is developing. They are presently in Glen
Allen or at REACH in Clinton where Pat donated a unit to the facility. Photos of the REACH assembly can be seen in her advertisement in The Rider. They will also be displayed at the Can-Am in London in March. Soon, Gail Haynes’ Five Star Ranch in Campbellville and Cowboy Loft in Brussels will each have one on site and anoth- er is being built in the Niagara region. Pat has already added a couple of unique equine prod- ucts to her line. Equinite Gems (one of a kind jewelry made from hoof clippings) and Bridge Estate Harrows (perfectly sized for arenas and round pens) are manufactured locally as well. The lovely miniature horse in a Grey Mare shed pic- tured on Pat’s ad is named Bella. The small horse had been rescued and her Plattsville owner needed to keep her tem- porarily separated from the other horses. Pat generously

loaned her the temporary little home until the quarantine was over. When speaking with Pat, I had to ask her about the name of her business, Grey Mare Equine. She explains “ My com- pany is named for my two Crab- bet Arabian mares I recently rescued from Michigan. There was originally seven but I man- aged to find homes for five of them with other horse lovers here in ON. and kept the two “grey mares” with health and soundness issues -–and of course I am a grey mare myself.” she laughs.
Pat’s passion is for don- keys and horses and ensuring they are given the care and respect they deserve. This is especially true for older or typi- cally less appreciated animals with disabilities or injuries. At Pat’s farm, no animal could be more appreciated than they are. Over the years, Pat has taken in several under-fed foals who she has rehabilitated and re-homed. The one horse who really stole her heart was Rambling Snap- py—aka ”Rama”. Pat adopted

her at a remarkable 30 years of age. Blind and unable to eat hay, she had lived without ani- mal companionship for many years. She required several feedings per day which became too much for her previous owner. From the day she arrived at the Bayfield farm, she treat- ed Pat’s miniature donkeys as her own babies and within her new herd, she blossomed. Pat’s “ old doll” taught many lessons
to those she met but sadly, old age took it’s tole this past December. She is buried beneath her favourite pasture “Rama’s Run”. Pat’s other pas- sion is for the rare and endan- gered breed, Poitou Donkeys. Pat say “I imported a breeding pair and recently had a jenny foal born in October; They are the most incredible animals.” Watch for them in an upcoming spring edition of The Rider.
