The 2011 QROOI stakes program has been released and there are plenty of opportunities to earn black type this season. However, given that there are 29 stake events scheduled to be run at both Ajax Downs and Fort Erie Race- track within only 22 weeks of racing, trainers of horses in all age categories will need to make some savvy deci- sions in order to maximize profits for their owners.

Trainers with 2 year old fillies will have some tough decisions to make if they wish to compete in the Princess Stakes Futurity. Trials for the Princess Stakes Futurity are scheduled within a week of the finals of the $50,000 added Maple Leaf Futurity

and the trials for $100,000 added Ontario Sires Stake Futurity. Owners of open quality Ontario Bred 2 year olds will have another decision to make in August when the $60,000 added All Canadian Futurity finals are held only nine days prior to the trials for the $105,000 added Alex Picov Memorial Futurity. Those who opt for the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity will need to manage these young horses well if they hope to be competitive against their non program registered, well rested counterparts 3 weeks later in the $150,000 added Ontario Jackpot Futurity, the premiere futurity of the season to be held at Fort Erie Race- track.

Non-Ontario bred colts and geld-

ings will have only 2 derby opportuni- ties at Ajax Downs during the 2011 meet, the $50,000 Maple Leaf Derby on June 19 and the $75,000 added All Canadian Derby on August 28. Owners of 3 year old fillies will get one more opportunity over the males in the $50,000 added Princess Stake Derby slated to run July 26th. Ontario Bred 3 year olds will be eligible for the $50,000 added Ontario Bred Derby on September 20.

New to the program for 2011 is the $150,000 added Ontario Jackpot Derby on October 8, to be run at Fort Erie Racetrack. Entry to this race is based on 2011 earnings, so 3 year olds campaigned at Ajax Downs throughout the season may have difficulty earning

enough purse money to be eligible, given that this race at the border oval is likely to attract competition from the US. In past years, the $105,000 added Alex Picov Memorial Championship has given owners another stake oppor- tunity for their 3 year olds, but con- flicts in 2011 with the All Canadian Derby. There are two races at Fort Erie(the $40,000 added Merial Fort Erie Distaff Challenge on July 3 for 3 and up fillies, and the $50,000 CanAm Nations Cup for 3 year olds and up on July 4) which add early season oppor- tunity, but both conflict with the Maple Leaf Derby and the Princess Stakes Derby.

Another exciting addition to the program is the $100,000 added Bank

March 2, 2011 – The Ontario Quarter Horse Racing Indus- try Development Program is inviting licensed Quarter Horse breeders and trainers to enrol as Pathway Mentors. Pathway Mentors are eligible for a wage subsidy attached to the employment of Pathway Students hired from the two- day Groom One Orientation Session being held March 25 –26, 2011.

There will be a “meet and greet” at Ajax Downs on March 26th at 3:00 p.m. for employers who want to meet the Pathway Students and learn more about skills devel- opment opportunities. The Quarter Horse racing industry is also encouraged to refer new employees or students to the Groom One Orientation Session. The Program subsi- dizes referrals from the indus- try.

The QROOI will have administrative representatives in the same area of the ORC licensing office at Ajax Downs for members to renew their 2011 membership during the above stated dates and time.

The Groom One Orienta- tion Session is hosted by Equine Guelph and is the first phase of the Groom One Cer- tificate Program. The two-day session will be held at Coun- try Hill Farm in Goodwood, Ontario and on the second day there will be a tour of Ajax Downs in the afternoon. Students that attend both days of the Groom One Orien- tation Session are recognized

as Pathway Students and will have a wage subsidy attached to their employment in the Quarter Horse racing industry. Pathway Mentors must enrol and must be committed to supporting the skills develop- ment of these employees, including the completion of the Groom One Certificate Program in 2011.

To be eligible to receive the wage subsidy as an employer you must:

• Be a licensed Quarter Horse breeder or licensed Quarter Horse trainer

• Enrol as a Pathway Mentor • Employ a Pathway Student • Submit a wage subsidy application form

The wage subsidy is equal to 25% of total wages paid, to a maximum of $140 per week, for a maximum of twenty (20) weeks of paid employment for each Pathway Student. It is not required that the twenty (20) weeks of employment be consecutive. The Pathway Mentor wage subsidy expires at the end of 2011 (whether twenty (20) weeks of employment have been completed or not). Eligi- bility for the Pathway Mentor wage subsidy is valid only in the year in which the Pathway Student attended the Groom

One Orientation Session. It is not required that the twenty (20) weeks of employment are provided by a single Pathway Mentor. If the Pathway Stu- dent moves employment from one Pathway Mentor to anoth- er, the remaining weeks of wage subsidy move with the student.

The Ontario Quarter Horse Racing Industry Devel- opment Program offers the Pathway to Employment and Education Program to support entry-level skills development for the Quarter Horse racing industry and to encourage employers to foster skills development for employees. To enrol as a Pathway Mentor or to refer a Pathway Student, contact Sandy Antho- ny, Program Coordinator by phone at 416-213-0520 or email at qhprogram@ontario- racingcommission.ca . You may download an application form from the Quarter Horse Program section of the Ontario Racing Commission website at www.ontariorac- ingcommission.ca.
