MARCH/APRIL 2011 THE RIDER /57 Canadian Women’s Horse Industry Association Conference By Kelly Bowers.
Organizers are delighted with results from the first Canadian WHIA Conference March 4th and 5th in Toronto. Attendees agree that the food and service providers at the Crowne Hotel were exceptional and needed little direction. The night before the conference began, speakers and exhibitors attended a social evening with drinks and appetizers. Also offered as bond- ing activities were morning yoga and a mini lun- cheon fashion show intended to bond the group, all sponsored by J’Equine Sport.
The conference on Friday and Saturday were an intense couple of days with much infor- mation and ideas exchanged. It didn’t take much effort to encourage people to network and devel- op new friendships. Those connections are exact- ly what Catherine Masters at Global WHIA intended and she was very pleased with the event. “Lucie Burdon-Sereda did a fabulous job making this event happen. We are very impressed with her professionalism and her dedication to details. Because of her efforts the Ontario chapter is real- ly going to be one of the strongest we have over- all. We cannot thank her enough for her hard work.”
Cheryl Gibson from Equi-bow commented, “The WHIA conference was beautifully orga- nized at a good facility. Lunches were exception- al and hotel staff went out of their way to be friendly and accommodating. Lucie Burdon- Sereda and Katherine Hendricks went far beyond any expectations in organizing everything. John Allen was a fabulous emcee and there were very interesting and informative speakers from many different walks of life. One of the most engaging speakers was Sharon Campbell-Rayment who talked about her experience with brain damage from a fall without a helmet (literally the ONE time she went without one!) What an experience to meet her and hear her story.”
Mike Nurse from The Sutherland-Chan School & Teaching Clinic adds, “Our clinic has been teaching massage therapy for over 30 years and we’ve had an Equine Massage elective for about 16 years. This however, was our first ven- ture with any organization involved with the horse industry. It was great for us to set up as an exhibitor and provide an instructor for a panel on horse wellness. Overall, we feel it was an excel- lent way to introduce our school to whole new group of people”
Mike Nurse accepts EBPM accreditation cerifi- cate for Sutherland-Chan.
Sharon Campbell-Rayment feels “the con- ference was a wonderful way to connect with other women who are passionate about the horse for the sake of the horse. I believe the conference is unique in its ability to bring women in the horse industry together with an openness to natu- ral and alternative therapies and training.” EBPM (Equine Business Professional
Members) certificates were presented to the newest members: WHIA Global; Equine Wellness Magazine; Richvale Saddlery; Performance Sales International; Just Add Horses; Christilot Boylen, Udo Lange and the newest mem- ber, Sutherland-Chan School and Teaching

Lucie would like to personally thank all the speakers who came to the conference. They were each chosen for their quality, professionalism and passion for the equine industry. Lucie succeeded in landing exceptional speakers who reached out to captivate our members. She is also grateful for their MC extraor- dinaire, John Allan. She also gives thanks for Nanette Levin, WHIA global repre- sentative and Kathryn Hendricks, her J’Equine Sport assistant volunteer. A spe- cial thank you to her daughter, Lauren who was Lucie’s “mini me” filling in the gaps in every way. Lauren also read the commentary for the video created by Chris- tilot Boylen of J’Equine Sport’s sponsored horse, DeNiro’s Exception, aka Dream. Udo Lange (train- er and rider) has taken Dream to the FEI Grand Prix Dressage Level and Intermediary II in Ger- many. His training tips can be found in Equine Well- ness Magazine.
Plans are already in the works for the next con- ference with plans to make it even bigger and better. For more information about WHIA or to watch the video made of the con- ference, check their web- site at
