Stage 4 C.O.P.D. Case Study
Owner Jim Wilson’s 17 year old Tennessee Walker Turbo had been suffering with C.O.P.D. for approxi- mately 2 years, and had been under the care of a vet. Through this time, Turbo was given Air Waves (and other natural remedies,) Prednisolone, Inhalers, and Dexamethazone (powder and liquid) in hopes to relieve him and overcome this condition. The Vets at University of Guelph determined that it was a stage 4 C.O.P.D. and to look at him it was very evident that he not only struggled to breathe but was under great duress in general. Certain- ly his good days were few and far between and his bad days were very intense and hard on him, and those who looked after him, daily.
While at the first Outdoor Equine Expo at Guelph, representatives of
Jane Savoie, one of the most recognized coaches in Olympic-level dressage, will bring the beauty and finesse of horses dancing dressage to her clinics at the Equine Expo. But when it comes to sheer power, Bel- gians, Percherons and Clydesdales are the musclemen of the equine world. They will be on display in full force in a variety of events and edu- cational workshops under the watch- ful eye of draft horse expert, Jim Poole.
For over 20 years, Jim Poole worked with and managed Budweis- er Clydesdale Operations at Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis, MO. At Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo from June 10 to 12, 2011, Poole will share his expertise and anecdotes from a lifelong career with draft horse hitches and teamsters. “OFA recognizes the impor- tance of the equine industry to rural Ontario and agriculture,” says Neil Currie, OFA’s General Manager. “We are proud to return as a major sponsor of Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo again and support the draft horse programming with Jim Poole.”
Originally from
Manitoba and then Alberta and Ontario, Poole has bred and shown draft horses all of his life. In 1989, Poole moved to St. Louis for a position with the Budweiser Clydesdales. Beginning as the supervisor of the St. Louis hitch, he rose to oper- ations manager, and then took over as the general manager of all operations in 1997. He served there until 2010, where he oversaw a herd of over 300 Clydes- dales and all six of Bud- weiser’s traveling eight- horse hitches.
Budweiser began using Clydesdales for advertising in 1933 and eventually showcased them in Budweiser television ads. Under Poole’s direction, Budweiser also created an exclusive Clydesdale breed- ing farm at Warm Springs Ranch in Boonville, MO.

At Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo, heavy horse enthusiasts will have the chance to learn and interact with Poole over the three days of the Expo taking place at the Iron Horse Equestrian Complex south of Milton. “I am honoured to be a part of the draft horse offering at Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo,” says Poole. “Canadian horses and breeders are leaders in the draft horse indus- try. Not only will the Equine Expo
provide a great thrill for visitors and exhibitors to see these magnificent animals in action - but it has the potential to play an important role in strengthening the growth of this industry in North America.” Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo will be held June 10 to 12 at the Iron Horse Equestrian Complex south of Milton, ON. Deerfield’s discovered an organic nutritional supplement called E3Live FOR HORSES. It was 100% AFA (blue-green algae) from Klamath Lake, Oregon.
Since the representative indicated that the micronutrients and anti-inflammatory qualities were very effective for allergies and symptoms of C.O.P.D., it was decided that this would be worth trying as literally there were no other viable avenues beyond watching him progressively get worse and worse. So on June 9th, 2010, Turbo began consuming E3Live FOR HORSES via a catheter syringe. We began by feeding him 3 cc’s in the morning and 3 cc’s in the afternoon. Within 10 days, we had increased to 45cc’s in the morning and another 45 cc’s in the afternoon. We maintained 90 cc/day and didn’t really expect anything much.
During the first month, it was not long till we noticed a good improvement in his coat and attitude but he was still coughing and still being given the meds. Turbo was out on pasture at this time and this was very positive for him. However, his condition did not seem any better, but we forged on. At times, certain symptoms, such as expelling mucous and phlegm were very bad. Soon after, we noticed that the difficult days were coming on less often and Turbo began walking around more and exploring his environment (instead of the usual behaviour of standing under a tree all day.) We even saw him run across the field for the first time in 9 months! He had a new look in his eyes and was beginning to seem like the “old Turbo” we all loved so dear- ly.
By the second month, the difference was clear to all that worked at the stable, and at this point Turbo was only getting an injection of Dex once a week. Upon the third month, the great- est changes were observed and at this point we stopped all meds. He had also returned to the top of the pecking order among the milder Gypsy Vanner Horses. Seeing him trotting around over the hills was a far cry from the Turbo everyone knew a short three months before, huddled under a tree, struggling to take each breath and coughing intensely.
Today, Turbo has made incredible progress towards a full recovery. He has only an occa- sional episode of mild coughing – nothing like before! Everyone at the stable is very excited to see the old Turbo back and Jim was able to ride him on a two-hour trail ride last week for the first time in two years! He says that “the AFA helped give me my horse back. Turbo is his old self again."
I truly believe that E3Live FOR HORSES is what made this recovery possible.
