AQHA Introduces Digital Edition of the Journal
AQHA is Going Digital
Beginning in April, The American Quarter Horse Journal will also be publishing a digital supplement to the print edition of the magazine.
There will be more than meets the eye with the April edi- tion of The American Quarter Horse Journal. The annual AQHA high-points edition of the Journal marks the beginning of the publication’s special digital supplement, which can be found at
aqha.com.
The April issue of the digital supplement will not be a com- plete duplicate of the April print edition. The digital supplement will include expanded information on all of the AQHA high- point award winners and their horses, as well as photo pages from the National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration, the World’s Greatest Horseman, the Sun Circuit and a few other spring shows. In addition, we’ll also be treating you to longer features on the all-around youth and amateur and the open all- around title winners, as well as a special announcement on the AQHA Professional’s Choice Horseman and Horsewoman of the Year awards.
You also won’t want to miss features on some 5,000-hour riders in the AQHA Horseback Riding Program, the winner of the 2010 AQHA Frequent Trail Ride Award, some King Ranch history and a Borrow a Trainer feature from our archives, which dovetails nicely with the Borrow a Trainer lesson in the April print edition of the Journal.
The partnership between the National Thoroughbred Racing Asso- ciation and the American Quarter Horse Association continues to offer significant discounts on a variety of products and services.

AQHA: A Negative Equine Piroplasmosis Test is Now Required for AQHA World Shows
Negative Equine Piroplasmosis Test Now a Requirement
The American Quarter Horse Journal -- Beginning July 1, 2011, all horses entering the grounds for any AQHA world champi- onship show - in Oklahoma City, Amarillo or Houston - will be required to present a certificate of a negative blood test for equine piroplasmosis. The tests must have been completed within the previous six months and will cost exhibitors $30-$40 per horse.
“As the industry leader, AQHA needs to be vigilant and establish testing require- ments to ensure any case of equine piroplas- mosis can’t be traced back to an AQHA event,” said Tom Persechino, AQHA exec- utive director of competition and breed integrity. “We’re encouraging all exhibitors to contact their veterinarians to schedule these tests. If the tests are completed around the second week of July, that horse will be eligible to show at the youth, select and open/amateur world without requiring another test.”
Equine piroplasmosis is a disease of horses, donkeys, mules and zebras that is caused by two parasitic organisms, Theile- ria equi and Babesia caballi. Although, equine piroplasmosis is primarily transmit- ted to horses by ticks, this bloodborne dis- ease has been spread mechanically from animal to animal by contaminated needles. Currently, racetracks in 11 states have testing requirements for Equine Piroplas- mosis and that number will increase. With the potential of an infected racehorse retir- ing to the show pen, the show industry is vulnerable.
In the digital edition of the Journal, we’re also including more of the popular statistical charts and leaders lists. The digital supplement will be free to current Journal sub- scribers, but to help kick it off, the April issue of the digital mag- azine will be available free to everyone.
While you can subscribe only to the digital magazine for $25 a year, it does not contain all the same information as the print edition. However, the digital supplement is free to all Jour- nal subscribers. You need a user name and Personal Identifica- tion Number to access the digital supplement.

AQHA believes that requiring a nega- tive test at its world shows is prudent and responsible. Currently, horses should be tested for both organisms, which requires two different tests costing $15-20 each. “These are inexpensive tests that we don’t believe will burden our members,” Persechino said.
has been completed. All horses seeking entry onto an AQHA World Show venue must be accompanied with a certificate demonstrating the horse(s) has been tested for piroplasmosis by a C-ELISA assay for both Theileria equi and Babesia caballi and reported to be negative. The testing shall be performed and the results reported by a lab- oratory certified and approved by the USDA to conduct the testing and shall be completed on a blood sample collected from the horse during the six month period preceding the animal’s entry onto the grounds.
AQHA is recommending the follow- ing rule: AQHA World Show Recommen- dations for EP Testing: Effective July 1, 2011, no horse shall be allowed entry onto a World Show venue without verification that required testing for equine piroplasmosis
Here is a link to a list of approved labs for these tests -
http://list.aqha.net/t/103443/1858450/5906/ 0/ . Test samples on horses arriving from an international country must be sent to the NVSL laboratory in Ames, Iowa.
