Under a full sun south Florida day, horseshow competition could not get much better for Orangeville, Ontario’s Mikala Chesler. Having moved up a division, her inexperience has not ‘shortened her stride even an inch’. The ODSS stu- dent is learning on a daily basis both in and out of the classroom. Every morning Monday through Thursday is spent hitting the books, while every afternoon and the remaining days of the week are spent at the horseshow. Whether it is school, the daily work of her horse Ghandi, the other Sher-Al Farm horses or the gym, she is busy. The FTI Win- ter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida begins before the crack of dawn Wednesday and runs thru Sunday with the ring crews grooming the rings at sundown. Mikala starts her show days at 6:30 a.m. and already there is plenty of activity. Her style has been noticed and she has begun to pick up rides from other owners. She notched a win with the power and speed class of the 14-17 jumpers with 60+ entries on Ericsson owned by Richard Cheska Showjumpers of Waukesau, Wis- consin. Ericsson is a talented handsome horse who would suit many juniors or amateurs. To top it off, Mikala riding her Sher-Al Farm Ghandi finished second in the 50+ entries Modified Sunday Classic proving the move up through divisions successful. Any ribbon on the Florida circuit is treasured but the first and seconds are hard to come by and are pinned with ringmaster presentation. While still being trained by her sister, Frankie Chesler, her dad Alan sometimes takes over the duties depending on the time schedules.
Mikala said, “I love riding him. He does everything you ask without question and is really fun to ride. I am glad that everyone got to see him do his job so well.” Selfishly, she hopes the ride to continue but understands that he is for sale and that is how the business goes. Happily she remarked, “Frankie now lets me try little jumps with some of the Sher-Al Farm horses.” The circuit continues to be the eye opener, watching super talented horses and riders along with having Olympic gold medal- ists sit down with you for a chat.
