Leveling the Playing Field Task force examines possibility of novice-level championship show

The American Quarter Horse Journal — In 2010, the Ameri- can Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee appointed a task force to review and address AQHA’s show initia- tives, with an eye toward

increasing participation in AQHA-approved events. The resulting recommen- dations were to manage the number and types of approved shows in 2011, and develop a leveling program that offers

showing opportunities for all rider and horse skill and ability levels - tested throughout 2011, with implementation in 2012. AQHA Professional Horse- woman Patti Carter-Pratt was hired as AQHA’s executive director of shows to oversee the development of AQHA’s levels initiative. Other task forces were appointed to discuss versa- tility ranch horse, introduc- tory shows, AQHA champi- ons/performance halter, regional championships, English/over fences, halter, ethics, show managers, stock show managers and ranchers.

The regional champi- onships task force met in January to examine the 11 AQHA Regional Champi-

onship shows. During the discus- sion, the question was asked, “What if Regional Champi- onships ultimately became regional novice championships leading to a national champi- onship?”

“The group pondered the question and it seemed to gain traction,” said Tom Persechino, AQHA executive director of

competition and breed integrity. “If a showing level above novice could be developed (which is being built as part of the new show ‘leveling’ program being spearheaded by Carter-Pratt), the concept of a championship that recognized novices for their accomplishments then guided them into the next level could have some merit. This is in the

very preliminary stages of discus- sion. We have a lot of due-dili- gence to do to make sure the con- cept is sound and viable.” AQHA news and informa- tion is a service of AQHA publi- cations. For more information on The American Quarter Horse Journal or America’s Horse, visit www.aqha.com

What’s this pilot horse

show all about? It is AQHA’s goal to review, modify and eliminate rules and policies that make it dif- ficult to evenly offer innovative opportunities for all American Quarter Horse competitors. Numerous modifications to novice eligibility, the addition of the limited rider program and the inclusion of regional champi- onship competitions are some examples of recent adjustments we’ve made to enhance your experience in the arena!

This pilot horse show is for- matted to offer a completely new

perspective on the different levels of competition, and we need your help! We believe these new group of classes completely reinvents the novice playing field – but we need you to try it out and give us advice on how to improve in the future. The pilot horse show offers several new levels within each division separated by the points you’ve earned; much like the current novice and limited rider program, but with more lev- els and competitive point group- ings ensuring your competition matches your experience and skill.

The best part, these new groupings apply for ALL CLASSES in youth, amateur, and open divisions!

AQHA Competition Levels Available in each division • Walk-Trot – Beginning com- petitors

• Rookie – earned less than 10 AQHA points

• Novice – earned 0-25 AQHA points
