REAL Little Boys Love Life on A Farm!! By Teri Davidson.

Our seven year old grandson has just fin- ished a week stay with his Nana and family on our farm. His mom is away for a weeks vaca- tion in the sun.

It has been so nice to have a little one here again. My son is away

at university so Layne had his uncles bedroom to use while he was here. Instead of waking up to city sounds like traffic and neighbours, Layne has enjoyed the early morning sun streaming into his uncles bedroom with the beauty of the mist on the mead- ows and the picturesque views of our horses graz- ing at the hay pile , play- ing rearing and chasing each other around all in the softness of the early sun . He’s had the opportunity of sleeping later because his Grampa drops off our daughter to high school school each morning and will take

Layne in to his school as well.

Every night as I tucked him in , Layne asked me to make scrambled eggs and toast for him in the morning and each morn- ing they were waiting for him when he came down the stairs for breakfast. His aunt has been a big help in getting Layne’s homework done and Layne has enjoyed coming to the barn to see her big horse as she tacks him up.

The week has flown by and I think I could keep Layne here forever! When we first bought the farm my son was just a little older than Layne is now. Ben resisted the idea of mov-

ing out to the country initially and wondered what he would do so far out from the city. It was a pleasant surprise then when I watched how much he enjoyed his walks with the dogs, some- times going far back into the woods and taking pictures of the nature that surrounded him. One day we spotted four big raccoons hiding high up in the maples star- ing down at us with their cute lit- tle masked faces. Ben was thrilled! It was always exhilarat- ing to approach the pond and hear the ducks and geese splash through the water and then soar into the sky , quacking at him for disturbing them.

Ben learned to ride horses, cut grass ( oh so much grass!!!) , help his dad with the chores and fixing things. We learned that Ben was allergic to hay!

Since he has gone away to university we have really missed his help and look forward to hav- ing him back here during the summers.

This year Ben will be bring- ing his lovely new girlfriend home for a week to the farm so she can she how and where he did most of his growing.

So many of the clients I work with are wanting a country lifestyle for their children , both boys and girls. There are 4H Clubs the children can join, they can learn to ride both horses and or motorized vehicles, they can buy old cars, store them and fix them up...another passion my son, husband and grandson share, they can run , dream and feel the free- dom of the wind on their faces.

I recently sold a young family a country property. They’d been looking for the right one for a couple of years and their two young sons were eager to get moved. The youngest had already approached a farm family his par- ents were friendly with and had arranged to buy and raise a calf from them. They also agreed to house on their property while he raised it. He joined the 4H Club and entered his calf in the Paris fair , winning a first place ribbon! When we found his family the perfect spot for them he came out during their final inspection of the new place with pen and paper in hand asking me to hold his tape while he measured one of the small buildings. I wondered what he was planning so thought- fully as he wrote his measure- ments down.....”Chickens!” he answered. His new venture this year , now that he is actually liv- ing on a farm, is to raise and enter his chickens in the fall fair. It made me feel happy to know I had helped him and his family achieve their dream.

It is something I think about often. How are lives are changed, shaped, by the paths we take. I wonder if my grandparents real- ized as they walked me through the orchards as a small child, as my grandmother baked and let me taste and help her with the rasp- berry pies and as I saw our cows grazing , played in the fields and barn and as my grandmother bun- dled us grandkids up one cold Easter morning and took us all out to the pasture so we could see a great big hare run by, telling us

we had just seen Peter Rabbit.....I wonder if she realized what heart she was instilling in us? The heart that cherishes life in the country, the heart that is warmed by the sun on a face, by the ener- gized feeling of seeing the buds on the trees as spring warms the earth, the one that sings as it watches the newborn foals dance and play with each other in the fields and run back to safety beside mommy’s flank.. The peaceful heart that appreciates the views of the white , white snow sitting softly on the green spruce branches as we look out into the landscape from our cozy spot in front of the winter fire.

This is the same heart I hope I am instilling in my children and grandchildren.
