Barbara Mitchell Named Jump Canada ‘Volunteer of the Year’
Ottawa, Ontario— Barbara Mitchell of Orangeville, ON, was honoured as the Jump Cana- da ‘Volunteer of the Year’ for 2010 in recognition of her dedi- cated support and development of hunter and jumper sport. Mitchell is best known for her devotion to the development of the sport in Canada. A long- time member of various Equine Canada and, previously, Canadi- an Equestrian Federation boards and committees, Mitchell was a driving force in the creation of the Ontario Hunter Jumper Association (OHJA) and served as President. Mitchell helped develop the Ontario Rising Star Series, which provided the plat- form for the Jump Canada Tal- ent Squad Series, a national pro- gram recognizing up-and-com- ing riders with the potential to become future members of the Canadian Equestrian Team. Most recently, Mitchell helped to conceptualize and implement three new domestic development programs. The Emerging Rider Series is a national series created to encour- age and recognize developing competitors while the Jump Canada Hunter Classic Series proved extremely popular among hunter competitors in 2010, its inaugural year. New for 2011, Mitchell has been involved with developing the Jump Canada Cup, a new series for Canadian Grand Prix riders. In addition, Mitchell has played a leading role in the Equine Canada National Coach- ing program since its inception. A well-known and respected Equine Canada Senior Judge for Hunter, Equitation, Hack and Jumper, Mitchell has been tire- less and generous in sharing the tremendous amount of knowl- edge gained through years of experience.
“I was truly honoured to receive this award,” said Mitchell, who recently complet- ed a maximum six-year term on the Jump Canada Board. “I have enjoyed working on all the programs through the years, and it is so gratifying that my peers recognize the value of these pro- grams and the long hours of work that go into their creation and implementation. Receiving the award at the Jump Canada Hall of Fame dinner was very exciting. I think that the work
the volunteers do behind the scenes plays a small part in sending our teams to the World Equestrian Games and the Olympics, and it is exciting to become a part of their success.” John Taylor, Chair of Jump Canada, noted, “Barbara Mitchell has been a tireless worker for the hunter and jumper world for many years. She has initiated many programs such as the Rising Star, Talent Squad, Emerging Riders, and Jump Canada Cup, in addition to the huge contribution she has made to the national coaching program. Barbara has worked on so many boards it would be hard to name them all. She is equally adept at giving a clinic or administering a program. This is a timely and well- deserved award.”
In its inaugural year, the 2001 Jump Canada ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award was given to Alan Chesler of Orangeville, ON, while Mark Samuel of Toronto, ON, was honoured in 2002 for his dedication to Cana- dian show jumping as the first Chair of Jump Canada. In 2003, Chesler was once again named the recipient based on his dedi- cation to the success of the FEI Children’s Final held in Calgary, AB. In 2004, Craig Collins of Loretto, ON, was recognized for the hundreds of hours of volun- teer service given to both Jump Canada and Equine Canada as a whole. Claudia Cojocar was the recipient in 2005 for the count- less hours she devoted to the development of coaching stan- dards. The Jump Canada Hall of Fame Committee was honoured with the award in 2006 in recog- nition of their dedicated support of Canadian show jumping. Victoria Andrew of Nepean, ON, has been closely involved with the coaching certification program and the transition to competency based education and training, and she was recognized for her efforts in 2007. In 2008, Lisa Cieplucha of Georgetown, ON, earned the award for her countless hours spent working with Equine Canada and Jump Canada as a valuable official, volunteer, clinician and commit- tee member. Jump Canada Past Chair Elizabeth Bordeaux of Surrey, BC, won the award in recognition of her dedicated sup- port of Canadian hunter and
