Advanced Animal Stem Cell Technology For Equines Performed in Canada

MediVet, the leading developer of in-clinic stem cell regenerative therapy for animals suffering from osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, ligament and cartilage injuries and similar ailments, ended its first year of busi- ness having achieved record advances in size and scope. Using MediVet’s new Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Procedure Kit and equipment, veterinary practitioners perform the drug-free procedure entirely in their own clinics, in one day, more quickly, effectively and eco- nomically than first-generation animal stem cell therapy. This new treatment, previously only available in Aus- tralia and New Zealand, was launched in the United States, Canada, South America and Hong Kong in 2010. During the past year, MediVet has signed agree- ments with more than 100 leading veterinarians and clin- ics, 12 distributor territories in 20 states and several Canadian provinces, providing vets with the ability to perform in-house stem cell procedures that can lengthen and rejuvenate the quality of life for adult dogs, cats and horses experiencing lameness, pain, and a restricted range of motion. Before stem cell therapy, veterinarians were limited to prescribing anti-inflammatory medicine

advanced, patented L.E.D. technology that activates millions of dormant cells already pre- sent in an animal’s own fat tissue.

This unique in-clinic treatment is com- pleted same day—within hours of fat collec- tion—instead of using the old method of ship- ping samples to an outside laboratory for stem cell extraction and waiting days for the cells to be returned to the vet for injection. The Medi- Vet Canada process delivers higher stem cell counts and a more effective treatment, while sharply reducing costs.

or performing expensive surgery. This past January, Dr. Don Armstrong from Halton Equine Veterinary Services in Campbellville, performed the first in-clinic procedure on two horses in Canada. He was assisted by Dr. Joseph Yocum, D.V.M, MediVet’s leading equine stem cell therapy specialist from Ken- tucky.

Dr. Armstrong performed the first Ontario proce- dure on an eight year old standardbred trotter. This horse has raced very successful since it was three years old. Throughout his career, he had problems in both front feet and ankles but late last year developed a suspensory problem in the right front. In January, fat derived stem cells were extracted from around the tail area, combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and injected into the defect. Afterwards, the horse was sent home to rest. The horse was re-examined during the third week of Febru- ary. The suspensory ligament in question did not have any heat or inflammation and the horse was walking sound. Ultrasound images of the ligament showed it was healing.

Dr. Don Armstrong’s second procedure was per- formed on a six year old standardbred gelding who raced as a trotter. During this horse’s career, he suffered from fragments that were removed from both knees. Multiple injuries occurred over time and more painkillers and hyaluronic acid were needed to keep him racing success- fully. The horse eventually contracted an idiopathic infection that subsided in mid December but he still exhibited lameness and suffered from swelling in the knee. A radiograph of the knee showed significant calci- um loss in the carpal bone and cartilage deterioration. In mid January a stem cell procedure was done and prp was injected into the intercarpal joint and intravenous. The horse was then given 30 day stall rest. At this point, the horse is in the paddock every day. A re-examination will be done in 90 days but so far the knee has reverted down to near regular size.

How the technology works

Stem cells harvested from the horses own fatty tis- sue are administered to accelerate the healing of muscles and joints damaged by injury, disease or degeneration. Following years of research, MediVet Canada clinical trial results show enhanced stem cell repair using an
