Why did you choose this field? I chose this field because I had a deep filled ambition to buy my own house & be as financially secure as is possible. Being a recruitment consultant would allow me this as there is huge potential to make copious amounts of money.
What qualifications are required if any?
If you are interested in working with the top consultancies, then they generally specify that they want you to be to degree calibre. However, it is not a complete necessity that you have any qualifications at all.
You mean that you can become a recruitment consultant without qualifications?
Yes. In the main, this industry is about prestige, it can be very clique at times – who you know, where you studied etc, who did you last work for.
Without qualifications, without a catalogue of ‘who’s who’ to hand - what tips could you give those that are interested in en- tering this field?
To be a recruitment consultant it is really about the individual.
It’s about their ability to be able to network, to make contacts, to be able to sell yourself & to be credible.
What is a typical day for a Recruitment Consultant? We would be expected to check our emails first thing. Then to respond to candidates who have sent in their CVs. Aim to match a candidate with a client. Attend business meetings with clients & interview candidates on a face to face basis. At an allotted time make cold calls –usually between 10 – 4pm as they are seen as key times to speak to potential clients.
Do you work to targets? Yes – we are given financial targets. Billings, which basically mean how much money you, bring in to the company that month. How many placements (match candidate to client) you achieve & how many new clients you introduce to the organisation.
What happens if you don’t manage to meet those targets?
Each consultancy have their own policies but as a general
rule of thumb – if you haven’t met the designated target within three months you are usually encouraged to rethink your strategy.
You mean leave?
If it transpires that you & your employer feel that this role is not actually for you – then unfortunately, yes.
What are the hours like? They can be incredibly long. Although, you actually sign a contract at the beginning of your employment for a specified timescale – if for instance you have not met your target of bringing in new business or achieving placements for that month, then it is expected of you to stay late. It’s not unusual to start at 8am & leave at 9pm!
Are you passionate about your role?
I am extremely passionate. Overall, it has been a great experience for me working as a recruitment consultant. It has taught me how to build relationships, master the art of networking, how to actually build a business & of course, the money side of things has been
fabulous.
What advice would you give somebody that wants to venture into this field? I would insist that you are completely certain that this is the field that you definitely wish to enter. Realise that it is not an airy fairy job – you really do have to work. You will be expected to meet all your given targets. It would also help to have an awareness of the field – that it does entail cold calling – that you can be rejected time after time on occasions therefore, that you need to be resilient & accept that ultimately, this role is a sales job.
How do you get your kix? By achieving my targets. I also receive a great sense of satisfaction when I match a candidate that really wants the job to a tailor made role. I find that very rewarding.
