Kix: How long have you been singing for? Alexis Houston: All my life, ever since I can remember … it’s always been a passion of mine and close to my heart.

Kix: Currently you are with AWM Records, Houston Entertainment, do you plan to stay with your family label in the future or would you like to branch out and try a new one? Alexis: AWM Records …. This is actually my company, I’m a female executive (she laughs) in addition to being one of the acts as well, I parted with EMI… They got my record label published. I’ll stay with this label, as long as it works I’m going to roll with it.

Kix: I read somewhere that before you started a career in singing and song writing you studied medicine, is this true? Alexis: Ummm yes! Yes, that’s true .. (she laughs) My parents wanted me to be a doctor! Can you imagine this (pointed at herself) being in a hospital! (She laughs). It was an MBS…. I finished four and a half years ago and applied for it when I was fourteen to fifteen years old. I Was always performing

and writing music, all the time… that’s why my parents would wonder why they couldn’t reach me at a certain hour, they thought that I was in the library but really I was some- where singing (we laugh). It was something I did as a child because my parents wanted me to have something to fall

back on and you want to please them. I enjoyed the sci- ences, I enjoyed studying and en- joyed the competi- tion to try and make

sure you get the top grades in class ….ummm, but music is my heart.

Kix: Did your sister Whitney inspire you to start a career in music or have you always enjoyed singing and been passionate about music? Alexis: I don’t know if she inspired me to have a career

and a business but to say that her influence isn’t on me and hundreds of other young female artists that grew up in the 80’s or 90’s … to Sereice in the Philippines, to Leona Lewis from here in the UK to Christina Aguilera in Staten Island, you know we’ve

all been fed on the Whitney Houston

legacy and her flash

lights are so bright you cant not see them .

Kix: I have listened to a few of your tracks, the ones

I’ve heard were about love …. Your new album ‘Speak Love and Life Lessons’ is about to come out, when will that be released and is the majority of it based on love? Alexis: Well the album comes out on the 28th (September), the first single ‘Change’ is out now … It’s a musical auto-biog- raphy, it’s a young girls journey to womanhood and how love

has influenced all the direct relationships in our life. And the lessons I’ve learnt from these lessons and how these lessons have shaped me as a person. Or that its romantic love, longed for, enjoyed, celebrated, gone terribly wrong or there’s family love and loosing love. There’s a song on the album called ‘Life Lessons’ which is a tribute to my father who I lost, the first real love of my life. To love yourself …. There’s a tune called ‘Inside’ about loving yourself, your inner strength and your inner-work in spite of everything else … so it’s really a story about

human experiences. I hope that young women, young people and old people too can see similar experiences in their own life. It was initially a catharsis for me but now it’s done, it’s more about connecting with people and having them see their own lives in some of the experiences that I’ve had.

Kix: You have a new single release from ‘Speak Love and Life Lessons’ called ‘Change’ is this song topic in anyway connected to personal changes in your own life?
