An introduction to Barnardo’s

In 1870, Dr Thomas Barnardo, founder of the UK’s largest children’s charity Barnardo’s, opened his first London refuge for vulnerable children.

Dr Barnardo believed that all children, regardless of race, creed, family background, ability and behaviour, had the right to be cared for and nurtured.

Today, as the UK’s largest children’s charity, Barnardo’s is still deeply committed to all children and young people, regardless of their

circumstances, gender, race, disability or behaviour. Barnardo’s currently has 415 projects around the UK that cater for specific needs of vulnerable children, young people and their families. Whatever the issue from drug misuse to disability; youth crime to mental health; sexual abuse to domestic violence; poverty to homelessness; Barnardo’s seeks to bring out the best in every child. Caring for Black children through the ages

Dr Thomas Barnardo accepted every child who came to him seeking help and so Barnar- do’s has a history of caring for black and minority ethnic children. The ‘Ever open door ‘ was a radical stance to take back in the 1800’s, as up un- til the 1960’s, awareness and understanding of race related issues was not on the social and moral agenda of the day.

The ‘Ever Open Door’ was a very wide door of admission that consisted of nine ‘nos’.

1. No destitute Child refused. 2. No Race Barrier. 3. No Creed Clause. 4. No Physical Disability 5. No Age limit.

6. No Money Promise. 7. No Voting. 8. No Waiting. 9. No Red Tape.
