Just Wright
Walking into the Lexi Cinema, in Kensal Rise, for this private screening of Just Wright held by Adinkra Films I didn’t know what to expect. Whether it was just being at such a tiny cinema, at a private screening for the first time or that I was just about to see Common act, but something had the butterflies in my stomach on overdrive. Now we all know that some musicians can act and take it very seriously, but we all know the obvious ones that fall flat on their face, so this had many of the audience and myself curious as to which category Common fell into. As the movie started Queen Latifah, who plays the lead role of Leslie Wright, was as engaging as ever, pulling you into her world and quickly making you understand what her character is about. We soon get our first glimpse of Common, I must say showing some real skill on the basketball court as Scott McKnight, he has obviously been training! Throughout the movie he portrayes his character quite tentatively, making you warm to him as the movie progressed.
With Leslie’s god sister setting her sights on McKnight to make her the basketball equivalent of a WAG, Leslie thinks her chance with Scott is gone, untill a nasty injury brings them together.
Tackling a whole host of social issues from family relationships to judging people on their appearances, the humour makes this movie flow, with refreshing honesty and for once a real leading lady in a Rom Com! Adding it’s own twist to the normal romantic comedy, it’s predominently black cast is moving urban movies into the mainsteam covering such a commercial genre in its own way. Although it was sometimes abit too far fetched, ‘
..in my dreams..: sprung to mind a few times, the movie flowed nicely, left a warm fuzzy feeling and made you get wrapped up in it, everything that it should do!
