ing, a cast underframe, running boards, a sheet of small parts, three lengths of .019″ diameter wire, a plas- tic sprue of AB brake parts by Tichy Train Group, plastic ladders and plas- tic corner stirrups by Tichy, preformed grab irons made from .014″ diameter wire, two sheets of decal lettering and four pages of instructions with photos of the prototypes and models. F&C offers flat resin kits for three different variations of this car. This new F&C kit is similar to flat resin kits offered by Yankee Clipper Models in the 1990s and later by F&C, except this new F&C kit includes a one-piece body in place of flat castings for sides, ends and roof. There are various im- provements to the detail on the cast- ings including excellent rivet detail on steel roof, flat steel ends and side braces. The side sheathing has a very slightly roughed surface to represent wood grain. The first step in assembly is to re-

move the tabs molded on the inside bot- tom edges of the one-piece body. This can be accomplished with the careful use of a knife, chisel and file. The edges of the underframe casting must be filed or sanded to fit snugly inside the body such that the bottoms of the truck bol- sters are flush with the side sills and the coupler mounting pads are flush with the bottom of the ends. The assembly instructions are not de-

tailed and are somewhat vague. Howev- er, a modeler familiar with building resin kits will have no difficulty assem- bling this kit. The instructions are basi- cally the same instructions provided in the flat resin kit originally offered by Yankee Clipper Models in the 1990s. One instruction refers to a diagram which is missing. The brief history sec- tion incorrectly identifies the original flat doors as “reverse-Creco” doors. Construction is relatively quick due

to the one-piece body with the most time consuming step being installing the brake system. A metal weight (not included) must be glued on the top of the underframe before it is glued in-

side the body casting. Trucks are not included in the kit

but appropriate ARA type Y trucks for this model are available as Bowser AAR 74277 or Kadee Quality Products No. 517 or by Red Caboose. To complete the review model, the following addi- tional parts were installed: flexible AAR air hoses by Hi-Tech Details (No. 6040), Kadee “scale” head metal whisker couplers (No. 158) and Bowser AAR 74277 trucks. The two decal sheets in the model kit provide lettering choices appropriate for the life of the cars, including the early rectangular B&M logo, two ver- sions of the “Minute Man” herald, the MINUTE MAN SERVICE slogan, MTC re- porting marks and the AT HOME ON BOSTON & MAINE slogan. The decal let- tering is not printed as sharp and clear as it could be. When completed, this new kit pro-

vides an excellent model of the B&M boxcar in common use from 1930 to the late 1960s. F&C currently offers the following different HO kits with a one- piece body for the XM-1 boxcar. Kit 6006 includes a one-piece body with an internal car lines (flat) roof, Youngs- town doors, AB brakes and B&M de- cals. Kit No. 6007 includes a one-piece body with external car lines (ribbed) roof, Youngstown doors, AB brakes and B&M decals. Kit No. 6010 includes a one-piece body with an internal car lines (flat) roof, flat doors, K brakes and B&M decals. Kit No. 6011 includes a one-piece body with an internal car lines (flat) roof, flat doors, AB brakes and B&M decals. Two additional kits are offered with

lettering to represent the XM-1 boxcars as they were later owned by the Wellsville, Addison & Galeton Railroad. Kit No. 6008 includes a one-piece body with an internal car lines (flat) roof, Youngstown doors, AB brakes and WAG decals. Kit No. 6009 includes a one-piece body with an external car lines (ribbed) roof, Youngstown doors, AB brakes and WAG decals. The kits are listed at $44.95 each.–JOHN RIDDELL
