car. I then repeated this making a single larger door for each end leav- ing extra material on top for roof pitch. The only difference is that I did not add the raised side area to the end walls. The end door was scratch built
from .030x.100” verticals and .030x .060” horizontals. The window is a HO scale Tichy Train Group work car window (#8068). Just remember size is relative and that using parts from other scales is a tried and true method. I used the same windows in the side wall, centered left to right and cutting it in. For the doors I framed in the sides
with Z-bracing. When you have the doors and windows attached to the
walls, cut in the roof pitch to the end walls. Now assemble the four walls. Moving the end walls in about .030” or so to create the door frames on the end walls. Then to reinforce the corners use .100x.100” strip stock. For the roof itself I made a form-
ing base out of pine. First, I ripped the pine to width on a table saw, then I adjusted the saw blade to a 7 degree angle and ripped the board again. I then added .020” styrene sheet to the roof material with su- perglue. I created the roof panels by adding .020x.040” strip styrene on the narrow edge making four equal sections. Add wide strips in the four fields, center as well as possible. The caboose stairs were made
from .188” H-columns, with two legs removed to form a “Z.” Then I added .020x .250” strips to the two sides to complete the staircase side walls. I used .100x.100” to secure the
cabin in place by gluing the bracing strips to the car and not to the cabin. Then railings were added using .020” brass rod stock. First lay out and drill the holes for the vertical posts. Then use superglue to attach the posts to the floor from the bot- tom of the car. I used boxcar red for the sides and
silver for the ends and roof. You now have a unique car to put in ser- vice for your S scale switch crews. —John Drozdak
