15. The top of the fuel tank was built using strips of styrene and quarter round. The quarter round overhangs the outside surface of the tank by .020″. The whole tank was eventually wrapped in .020″ styrene to build up the outer wall. 16. The bottom of the fuel tank re- ceived styrene furring strips. These strips added a little more dimen-

sion to the fuel tank once the outer styrene wall was added. 17. In this view of the finished B-end, you can also see the contour of the modified fuel tank. 18. The A-end did not receive the grab irons. 19. The finished B-unit shows off the newly fashioned fuel tank. Note the small “F” (for front) stenciled in the yellow strip near the A-end.

Once finished, I used cyanoacrylate to attach the fuel tank to the frame per- manently. There will be no need to re- move the tank in the future so cyano- acrylate is fine for this. I disassembled the trucks in order to paint them. The trucks are so detailed that I didn’t think it was possible to paint them well with a brush. I used Pol- ly Scale Grimy Black on the trucks and the fuel tank. The wheel faces were painted Polly Scale Roof Brown. A light

dusting of Polly Scale Roof Brown on the trucks added the road grime I talked about earlier when I was painting the body. Fuel spillage on the fuel tank was modeled by airbrushing Polly Scale En- gine Black wherever the spill was de- sired and then I finished that area with Testors Model Master Clear Gloss. I used Kadee “Scale” couplers with the trip pins cut off on each end of the model. This is probably the most rewarding pair of engines I have built in a long

time. The use of the custom, etched- metal panels and parts really made this project possible. Without those parts I could never have modeled these engines this faithfully. Having proven that I can modify an engine in this manner really opens up the possibili- ties for future projects. There are so many engines and cars that I previous- ly couldn’t do or wouldn’t even at- tempt. I am really looking forward to what comes next!
