lent source of material, as well. There are plenty of close-up photos, and con- versely, plenty of overall scene photos giving you not only the sense of what equipment and rolling stock was used in any particular period, but also the terrain and “atmosphere” of the time. Very important information. Why am I so ecstatic about this book?


Because I grew up in Southern Califor- nia and watched and photographed the Santa Fe since the early 1960s. That of course, is just a short period of time compared to the length and breadth of the coverage found in this book. Howev- er, it has given me enough familiarity with the railway to acknowledge that Signor not only knows what he’s talking about, but he enlightened me on so much familiar territory. His thoroughness as an author and

It operated with steam switch engines until dieselization with Alco power in 1946. It was built to serve the piers and industries of the waterfront area, interchanging with Southern Pacific at King Street, and with Santa Fe, Northwestern Pacific, and Western Pacific by car float. But eventually decline set in, despite dieselization, as seaborne traffic became container-
