fans and modelers, it must surely be “Alco.” The American Locomotive Com- pany (Alco) of Schenectady, New York, was not America’s most commercially successful diesel locomotive builder. However, despite Alco’s exit from the locomotive business in 1969, the com- pany’s diesels remain fan favorites. Many model railroad manufacturers have produced models of Alco’s Centu- ry-series units of the 1960s. Until the arrival of Bowser’s most recent offer- ing, however, there hasn’t been a high quality plastic model of the C-430. The Century 430 first debuted in the


spring of 1967 when a three-unit demonstrator set of the four-axle, 3,000 h.p. units hit the rails. Three thousand horsepower was, for the time, a lot to put into only four traction motors and
