2014 Valley Forge RPM Meet An overview of the weekend’s events /William C. Schaumburg

ost “prototype meets” are de- cidedly regional, that is, the models on display and the seminars reflect where the event is held. Additionally, the majority of those attending are within a few hours or a few states’

driving time. This is a

strength, since the “home roads” are the ones that we usually model. An RPM is a great place for networking, so necessary for modeling fallen flags, as many of us do. Balancing this, most of them also have clinics that transcend the area or have a wide modeling appli- cation. Sometimes it is just nice to sit

With photos next to the models and in his clinic on P&LE caboos- es, Larry Kline showed how he made P&LE 504 by removing one body panel to the right of the bay window on a Lionel NYC caboose (it actually is accurate for an NYC car). The model has a new under- frame, Yoder trucks and San Juan brake gear. PRR 981380, an MTH

car, had its cupola moved from centered to offset, a new overlay covering the roof, and scratchbuilt running boards and brake rig- ging. The trucks are PSC with NWSL wheels; the paint is Scalecoat II Oxide Red. The models are O scale. Sadly, Larry, one of the hosts of RPM-East/Pittsburgh, passed away a few weeks after the meet.

Shifting gears from his usual work in N scale, Jim Lincoln showed this Atlas O boxcar (above). He replaced the grabs and ladders with finer parts, then re-did the bolsters and cushioned draft gear. The car has Proto 48 wheelsets and cut lever-operated ProtoCraft couplers. Beloware Jim’s N scale Railbox, done using an InterMountain PS 5277 boxcar with a revised roof, and his stock BN hi-cube from Exact Rail. The weathering is stunning.
