accordingly Alco developed a new high- adhesion, two-axle truck for these units. The new truck looked very differ- ent from the traditional double-equal- ized AAR B type truck so common un- der Alco’s previous four-axle units. It had prominent outside springs at the center of a simpler sideframe. The C-430 demos carried Alco’s at- tractive gray, white and black colors that were shared with the C-415 and C-636 demonstrators. Initially, they tested on the Delaware & Hudson be- fore trials on the New York Central and Seaboard Coast Line. There is some debate about other demonstra- tions. One unconfirmed report had the C-430 demos on the Illinois Central where they performed so well that IC placed an order with Alco. Unfortu- nately, rather than C-430’s, Illinois Central acquired C-636’s which never lived up to expectations. Sales of the C-430 were modest. Seaboard Coast Line bought the three demonstrators eventually passing them on to subsidiary Louisville & Nashville. Reading purchased a pair of units and in unique fashion specified that they ride on traditional AAR B

trucks. These units eventually found their way onto the Conrail roster with one unit in a patched paint scheme and the other finishing its career in Conrail blue. The Green Bay & Western ac- quired a single unit on Hi-Ad trucks. The largest fleet of C-430’s was the


ten units that went to New York Cen- tral. All of them rode on Hi-Ad trucks and had the top edge of their air in- take/aftercooler housing beveled to ac- commodate the restrictive clearances of NYC’s east shore route to Manhat- tan. The Central’s units were placed in high-speed freight service and initially were assigned to the company’s repair shops in Syracuse, New York. Not long after delivery, ownership of the NYC fleet passed to Penn Central and the maintenance of the C-430’s moved to Selkirk Yard near Albany, New York. Penn Central collapsed into Conrail in 1976 and the units moved to transfer service in the steel district around Mingo Junction, Ohio, their black paint surrendering to blue. Fortunately, seven of the ex-NYC C-
