3. Once the cuts were all dressed with sanding sticks and files, a strip of styrene was added around the inside of each cut. This strip acts as a shelf for the screen and the etched brass panels to be attached to. 4. The etched panels are attached securely with cyanoacrylate. 5. The structural members, which were created with styrene strips, show through in some of the air intakes. The two cooling grids in the intakes were also created with styrene. Aluminum Micro mesh screen is used in the intakes. 6. This detailed view shows the location of the cool- ing grids as well as the structural members. The diaphragms have also been added, as well as the diaphragm lift rings which were etched by the author. 7. The styrene cooling grids are placed below the intakes in which they will be mounted. The author also replaced the plastic lift rings on the roof with metal ones from Detail Associates. 8. Since they will be hidden be- hind the aluminum screen, the styrene cooling grids are not overly detailed. 9. The Archer louvers have been added to the etched metal panels along with the doorway grab rails.

this point. They fit neatly into position using tabs and slots on the inside of the carbody. The center step, which is attached to the fuel tank skirt, needed a little modification. The railroad re- moved the skirts from their engines by this time so I had to remove the step from the skirt. I was able to cut away the skirt pieces and attach the step to the bottom of the body. This is a little tricky and fragile as well, but once the model is assembled the fuel tank will protect the step. I also removed the fuel filler, sight glass and emergency fuel cut-off switch from the skirt. I at- tached this piece to the body next to the step. When the skirts were re- moved, this hardware just seemed to hover in place so don’t worry about what is behind the parts. The last part to add prior to paint is

the Archer louvers. There are three sets of louvers which are mounted on the etched brass porthole window pan- el. These are applied the same way as decals so a smooth mounting surface is necessary. The brass is as smooth as it gets so I just mounted them right to the brass. I started painting the model once the decals had dried. I airbrushed the Polly Scale Seaboard Yellow first. The whole lower half of the model gets this paint and I also used it to seal the louver de-
